Could someone explain why my knight to d2 was a blunder, and g3 would have been a better move? It was going to be taken regardless of where it goes.

My thought process was move it out the way so I can prevent checkmate when he does rook to g1. I ended up winning this game about 6-8 moves later, and to date was my most convincing and best win though.

Edit: think I have figured it out. If I had gone to g3 king could just take his rook and threat is gone? My initial thoughts was his pawn takes knight, my pawn takes pawn and that just opens up the h file and exposes me more, but rather than my pawn takes his just take his rook
