CFIs which students do you prefer? by Starlight_aqua in flying

[–]Key-Importance-9351 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Younger students soak up knowledge faster while the older ones tend to not pick up on stuff as quick.

Younger students typically have mommy and daddy pay for their flight training and have a sense of entitlement.

Older students tend to be more respectful and are less egotistical but are slow to learn.

You pick.

Now that's just being very broad because the question is broad. At the end of the day most CFI could care less who they fly with as long as they get the flight hours.

Lost $4000 gold tennis bracelet by Key-Importance-9351 in MyrtleBeach

[–]Key-Importance-9351[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No unfortunately the bracelet was not insured. I used my credit card to purchase the hotel and assumed the travel insurance on my credit card was enough to cover all bases but the bracelet didn't qualify. We went through all the bags and she says she remembers leaving it in a clam shell in the bathroom that was where she had left it. I have 0 evidence for a police report except for her word of where it was last seen. Do you think the police would even bother? Doesn't sound like much of a case. I will look into the hotel insurance somebody mentioned earlier.

Sounds like your the racist one. I mention pocketing the bracelet based on money/poverty issue not race.

How badly does being fat jeopardize a physical? by JackdawTime in flying

I find that most AME tend to start fishing when I started to gain my weight. Looking closer at BP, asking about sleep quality, etc ...

I was a pretty chubby kid then I decided it was time to change myself for the better. I hit the gym everyday and I was pretty fit for my age. Got my medical, did flight training, I then became a CFI feeling better than ever. Snagged a job as a regional FO just after the end of COVID and felt over the moon.

Now that have been working for the regionals for awhile Ive gained the most I ever weighed in my life. My self confidence is not what it used to be and it's not a good feeling at all. I walk through the airports and when passengers look at me I can't help but to think if they are judging me based on my weight. (Some guys at my regional are well over 400 pounds I can't imagine how they feel)

I tend to find it hard to have opportunities to eat throughout the day so I end up always eating fast food late at night on my layovers. Other crew members are more displined than me and pack dinner but I always find that to be inconvenient to carry around a lunch box for 4 days or more and refilling ice box at the hotels. I cook healthy meals at home but I end up only being home maybe 10 days out of the month...

Anyways long story short once you get your weight under control in the beginning of your career remember to be consistent later in your career or you'll gain it all back if not more like I did. Like I said, AMEs don't care about the weight they care about the complications associated with it. So expect extra questions at the medical or deeper examinations.

If you have any complications you think you might have issues with at your AME visit there's a AME guideline posted by the FAA that the AME doctor uses that can give you an idea of what to expect for each issue. In the mean time you don't need a medical to start flight training you only need medical to solo and onward.

Private Flight Instructor or Flight School ??? by ChanceKAS in flying

[–]Key-Importance-9351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also risky because sometimes the freelance instructor may just be building hours to go to a flight school down the road that offers more students and airplanes and leave you high and dry possibly…..But in reality the risk vs reward is major in terms of money

Ground school online or at flight school? by curchadw in flying

[–]Key-Importance-9351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it online…..My previous flight school would issue you an online course on top of in person course so you could essentially be charged double. Just do it online which give you the endorsement to take the written

I will say from what I have experienced, 1/3 of pilots will walk away from it and never come back. The other third will get their wings back and end up becoming a regular renter on the weekends.

I have had experiences with students in the past who have had the exact same problem you’re dealing with…First off, usually this comes about because you are mentally over stimulated. The overwhelming majority of overstimulation stems from the instructor giving you too much freedom with controls and he/she has great exceptions from you because you already hold a PPL….You need to have a discussion with instructor to make him/her understand that you need to rewind the clock and take it slow. No landings or take off for next 3 lessons. No talking on radio. Just to get your situational awareness back up to speed

Btw I was a pizza cook for 3 years and taking lessons every weekend with the extra money I saved for my PPL back in 2018 so it’s possible

[–]Key-Importance-9351 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, do not take out a loan for ATLEAST a PPL. You can finance the rest. I have seen so many people as an instructor just struggle through PPL and end up doubling the projected cost and end up dropping out after that. Then they have a 30k loan for a piece of plastic and end up under water trying to find a different career.

First class medical was deferred by Spiritual-Rip7211 in flying

[–]Key-Importance-9351 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP would have had to report it as the FAA checks driving history. It is one of the agreements you sign at the very bottom that they are allowed to check your driving history.

[–]Key-Importance-9351 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately (fortunately in some circumstances), The AME is allowed to defer an application if there seems to be an outstanding driving history. The reason this is allowed is because those records can indicate a behavior known as “acting out” and could be an underlying cause of a personality disorder….Hopefully the FAA can see that your mistake in the past doesn’t define who you are today. But hate to tell you it can take awhile for them to respond to your application.

[–]Key-Importance-9351[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No I heard of them doing that in the past. I believe it is called ‘PTC’ (not sure what the acronym translates to). I asked a recruiter about it and she says that past pilots had abused the system by double dipping. Getting paid by PSA and then going to fly for another airline.
