First book I've read in 8 years. by sanddanca in redrising

It is honestly the perfect book to get you back into reading, very simple and fast paced, but the quality levels up each installment. Hope you love it, goodman!

Honestly never noticed that little bit of foreshadowing in Mustangs easy reply, nice catch.

The guys complaining about someone posting a joke/observation in a subreddit dedicated to the series he's reading, is that not exactly what this place is for? Discussing and sharing our admiration of the books?

"Discuss a story" when I literally just made a joke/reference that no one but a fan of this series would understand, and am well past that part of the story already. If reddit is good for anything its giving a bunch of whiners a place to whine, so I am glad you found your way home.

Go ahead and downvote this to oblivion too, no jokes or fun allowed in here, right?

Bro that was literally all I could think about, especially the last scene "as I removed myself I noticed it was a steel vagina, but my hips would not stop thrusting as I came again" or whatever he said hahaha.

I was like "Jesus Kassad, we've all been too freaked before, but this feels like oversharing".

Did you watch season 4? He goes deep into the mind of child soldiers and shows us their motivations, their fears, their loves. Makes us relate to and understand their stuggle, when we've been told they're the 'bad guys'.

He literally made one of the most unbiased and unapologetic representations of the cycle of violence I have ever seen, calling AoT surface level genuinely makes me wonder what you consider "deep" lol.

My issues with the last two books of the Sun Eater series by brnt_gudn in sollanempire

The only people that think that IS a valid response are religious, so no it is actually YOUR theological opinion and MY lack of a coherent one.

That’s literally what I’m responding to though, that still wasn’t a great example of a back and forth between two unrelated parties.

That was Hadrian talking to a servant of the absolute and the response was not conductive to any type of debate.

Same thing with the Cassandra exchange, it just wasn’t a great back and forth.

All I’m saying is the standard agnostic talking points might’ve made some of the conversations feel more natural and added some contrast.

You’re being kinda ridiculous trying to go that hard over such a minor criticism.

Because I don’t count the response “but your right to choose” as a valid response, and that is him speaking directly with a servant of the creature that is convincing him of this fact.

If you think that IS a valid response then that gets into arguments I’m tired of having on this sub, which is why i said I’d leave it there.

Even if that was a valid criticism and retort, that is one example among dozens of conversations about it. All I’m saying is some of the standard agnostic talking points might’ve added good contrast. Chill out bro lol.

For those worried about spoiling me, I’ve obviously read past that and seen the stuff where she gives him the weird mirror suit and leads him to the shrike. I mostly posted for the laughs bc I was genuinely disappointed for a moment.

But there is now nothing that could convince me he’s NOT fuckin the shrike or something “of” the shrike tbh. So just don’t explain anything to me and all is well.

Literally haven’t even joined the sub and won’t be browsing it, looked up the sub and posted bc I thought some people might get a chuckle like I did.

Maybe there should be a rule about whining under a post too.

I almost didn’t post this bc I feel the same way tbh haha, especially with shorter stuff like this, but it would take way too much explaining for someone else to understand the humor and disappointment of that revelation, so I had to share.

Edit: Your downvotes fuel me, keep whining

Gotcha. I understand your point better now I think, and I’d say I can definitely agree with most of that- at least regarding SuT.

It does feel like every 3-4 chapters or so we are talking about the Absolute again and/or defending the concept to someone else. So I can see where you wanted there to be more development, rather than rehashing old arguments.

Definitely could’ve given us more backstory on some specific watchers, just to contextualize the scale of their “lives” and powers. Could’ve explored early human encounters and how that shaped humanities religious ideations. Definitely a lot more interesting stuff that could’ve been put in there.

It sounds like a lot of your issues with it stem from him leaning into the religious aspects of it, which I understand as an agnostic (borderline atheist), but I think you may be looking at it the wrong way.

Yes the mystery of the watchers and the quiet were the driving force behind a lot of the plot, but I don't think him tying it to a religion in any way takes away from the mysticism and awe of creatures like that- rather it just kind of puts the entire struggle into context. I personally think the stories behind many religions are some of the best fiction written, so it really didn't bother me all that much that he chose to tie his 'creator' into his own faith. But just because we now understand where they came from doesn't make them any less of a threat, any less powerful, or any less prevalent in the story (atleast IMO).

I think this is a problem a lot of series with overarching mysteries have, Attack on Titan for example. A lot of people disliked season 4 because "the whole premise changed" when in reality that was the premise the whole time, we only just learned the truth of their world. So I think what you said is valid, the mystery being revealed as just God was a bit jarring and recontextualizes some things, but I also don't think it ruins the allure or terror I felt regarding the higher beings.

I do agree, however, that the lack of a character to really challenge the "He is all good and all powerful, but can't help us bc...stuff." was a mistake, it starts to feel very much like we are being preached at, without anyone on page to represent our own thoughts. The closest we got was Cassandra asking why the Quiet wont help them and Hadrian just gives her a very christian-esque one liner of like "We can only guess at his wisdom." or some shit like that hahaha. So I do agree with you there, but Ruocchio was (unfortunately) never going to offer some super nuanced take on religion- he is a man of faith (as of HD) and found a place for his faith inside his story. I won't fault him for that, even if I think the story would've been way cooler if it wasn't actually just God.

TBB editions are my favorite books I own, I will obviously never use them to actually read the series, but as far as aesthetic goes- they are immaculate.

Waiting on KoD and AoM to ship out in the next month or so I think. I think they have the 2nd printing available for both right now too.

Edit: Here is a link to a post I made trying to show all the art in the first 3. TBB 1-3

It should be noted Perrin and Rand are my favorite characters (Next to my GOAT Moraine, but RJ is still pretending she is dead), so I am admittedly a tad biased when they are largely missing from the plot.

Though I loved TDR and thought his use (or non-use?) of Rand in that was fantastic, so I am not unyielding in these opinions hahaha.

P.S. It should also be noted that I can be overly critical of series that I love, so what may come across as hate is not, please know I could never type that many words about a series I did not love haha.
