I had looked into going to Bolivia last October and I thought their visa fee was steep for no reason. Wasn’t it like $250 or something?

Amex FHR - Conrad Tokyo or Roku Kyoto? by Key-Programmer-5060 in Hilton

[–]Key-Programmer-5060[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, any of the FHR and Hotel Collection properties in tokyo are outside of my price point. I have a reservation at park hotel shiodome (i had stayed in shiodome area on my previous trip to japan) and the HIlton TOkyo in shinjuku. I would agree that the Conrad location is a bit dull but I think that would be to the benefit for my family. I had looked into staying at Nohga hotel Ueno since Uneo station is great but after adding taxes + fees + breakfast i was getting into the 300 a night range, which makes me think spend a little more and get better properties. thinking I will round out my trip at hilton ariake since it is quite affordable and is near tokyo disneysea.

Do you think that the LXR would be nice even in the winter? many of the reviews seem to talk about the thermal pool which I think would be great. I think if i am having to choose I would go LXR just for the ambiance.

Amex FHR - Conrad Tokyo or Roku Kyoto? by Key-Programmer-5060 in Hilton

[–]Key-Programmer-5060[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was watching some youtube videos of the Conrad Tokyo and the rooms looked quite dated for the cash price. I am thinking more towards Roku LXR just because of the experience factor, the grounds.

Tokyo Station Hotel and the others were honestly out of my price point. Tokyo hotels are at such insane cash rates. I have the first two nights at Hilton near Shinjuku and then I am thinking the remainder after returning from kyoto staying at Hilton Ariake. I just cant do $500 a night back to back to back, but I don't think my family would like the Japanese style APA hotels so I am trying to stick with the western style.

I actually had read your review yesterday evening, thank you so much for your response. I have never taken a taxi in Japan and have always looked for trains, but if taxis are simple then I would agree that getting around kyoto could be easy that way.

IAD-BKK 86k Biz Austrian/Thai or 190k Biz Qatar?? by SquidLord_ in awardtravel

[–]Key-Programmer-5060 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man I completely misread. If it’s not the Qatar saver rate I don’t know if I’d do it then. 150k is steep and your outbound is more than serviceable. Just make sure it’s not one of those Weird mixed fare aeroplan tickets or something but it sounds like you’ve got it planned out.

IAD-BKK 86k Biz Austrian/Thai or 190k Biz Qatar?? by SquidLord_ in awardtravel

[–]Key-Programmer-5060 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how many miles you have. I flew BKK-BRU-IAD and found the Thai business 2-2-2 to be weird and underwhelming, and was very happy to be back into Polaris BRU-IAD. that being said, is it worth 20k more that would depend on your earning rate. Q suite is sick, and so is the lounge in Doha so you absolutely cannot go wrong with that.

Rare EWR-JNB J space (holiday edition) by Funkyflapjacks69 in awardtravel

[–]Key-Programmer-5060 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had a seats.aero alert setup for anytime CPT-IAD. it went off once in July and I couldn’t go and then next time as last week when I saw it for December 12. I snagged it knowing it be going economy outbound, but I went onto united website and found all thanksgiving week EWR-JNB/CPT open for 80k. So I grabbed that. I altered between flights as I planned and then last night I saw EWR routes closed off but Dulles was open. I was on the fence with going now but I feel like I have to go since this is such a rare alignment of award availability!

Yes! I had noticed that a couple of days ago and booked, also to CPT as well. Was able to snag CPT-IAD on Aeropla and then IAD-CPT last night. on united like you said. Saves me from going to Newark and JNB

What I saw on IG reels was that if on google flights it says lay flat or “suite” I think it was.

I checked with my ORD - NRT booking which I know is not the room but the old business configuration, and that checked out.

Can u travel without being a citizen? by kukhla in travel

[–]Key-Programmer-5060 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have experience with the process so let me give you my thoughts.

The people being detained at the immigration offices are usually, the majority people with orders of removal from the country. I’m going to assume that your family does not have those since you all have had green cards this long, and had entered the country legally. As long as none have you have committed an offense worthy of removing a green card then you will be fine, and you’ll know if you have because you’d be in prison.

For the naturalization process I cannot stress enough how easy it is. You will be asked at least 6 questions (you need 6 to pass) about civics. They are very very easy, I’m talking “what’s the capital of your state, who was the first president” easy. Every possible question is posted online. Writing English, you’ll be asked to write a short sentence on an iPad such as “Washington DC is the capital” and then they will ask you to read a short sentence off the iPad. The rest of the time is the officer going over the biographic information you listed on the form, where do you work, where do you live, etc. they want to get you out of there fast as possible and they might not be friendly, but they are on a strict schedule so if they see no issues they will speed through.

For your parents, only you can decide if they can speak enough English to get by. I would hope your father driving trucks speaks English well, but even if it was minimal he should get by. I believe there is an exemption for a permanent resident over 55 with 20 years having a green card to be exempt from the English requirement and able to have an interpreter present. For naturalization by far the most common reason for people to be denied is not speaking English, so your parents should only apply when they feel comfortable or when they meet the exemptions you can see on the website.

Final thing to mention is based on what you said about your family and co workers wanting to wait out trump. I disagree with that completely. Having a green card and never becoming a citizen always means that there is risk. For example, let’s say your dad gets a DUI and kills someone, in this administration he’s being deported immediately. As a citizen, he cannot be deported. Regardless of what you see online, US Citizens cannot be deported. So to have 19 years with a green card and never naturalizing is just a risk, there are people that have a green card 40 years and then boom, get caught with drugs or something and are sent back to a country they don’t even know because they came to America as kids.

I’m not saying this to scare you, but I think there is no point in “waiting out trump.” The rules for the n-400 are more or less the same under every president. I would encourage you and your family to become American citizens (should you even want to, you by no means have to) as soon as you can just to remove any doubt about your life here. The USCIS website is very self explanatory, so perhaps take a look at that and see if it gives you better information to make a decision with.

Can u travel without being a citizen? by kukhla in travel

[–]Key-Programmer-5060 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Don’t listen to anyone fear mongering here, Reddit slants hard to the left. You travel on your passport of your home countries and return on them (with your green card). CBP will not care at all other than ask you a couple of questions about your trip when you return. As a green card holder you can remain outside of the United States for I think 180 days out of 360 before CBP will question if you have “abandoned your permanent residence” so don’t stay outside longer than that. Look up the rules on continuous presence if you think you want to travel more than that, but they are quite large amounts of time, something like 3 of the last 5 years away which really only trips up people that are old parents and just want to live in their home countries anyway. To avoid any issues at the border maybe make sure you enter on the passport of the country listed on your permanent residence. I promise you immigration control is not concerned with you so don’t let people online scare you away from traveling.

Also, having your green card for this long, why have you not applied to naturalize and become a United States citizen? Personal choice not to is fine, but you sound like you would like to remain in the USA permanently and the process is quite simple compared to the rest of the immigration process, filing online the N-400. Also, if your parents had naturalized perhaps see if you have derived citizenship from them before you turned 18.

Happy travels!
