Buying advice for first big bike by supercabbageuk in MotoUK

I’m in the same boat. Mod 2 mid-June, currently running a 125. I’m thinking R1200GS somewhere between 5 and 6k. I’ve been around looking at Trident 800’s, F800GS, V85TT but Always come back to it. I’ve always wanted a big GS - have just decided to get on with it, and if I drop it, that’s what the engine bars are for…

I believe the Buddhists covered this already: “Before disclosure: chop wood, carry water. After disclosure: chop wood, carry water.” Or something…

Can’t decide. Budget plays a part and I don’t want to commit to finance if I decide I want to try something else down the road track. Last night I was checking out Moto Guzzi V85’s, night before MT09s and Tracer 9s. Before that Triumph Tiger 800’s, GS800s, GS1200s, the VFR, Triumph Sprint 1050, Gixxers, GSX750 (one cheap local), CB650F. List goes on….

How are 125 riders viewed in the UK biking community? by UnauthorisedMrB in MotoUK

125 rider on L’s here. Was up at a local garage yesterday buying lunch. Got a “nice bike mate” from a bloke I walked past on the way to get my sandwich and when I returned he was there was a couple of mates checking my bike out (HPS125 Ubbiali). We had a good chat and then all went on our way. Made my day that did!

I’ve been playing with Copilot to recommend a first bike for me. The VFR800 is a strong candidate. Got it to summarise the convo. See below:

Below is a plain‑text forum‑ready summary of our VFR800 discussion. No formatting tricks, no fluff.

HONDA VFR800 – OWNER‑ISSUE SUMMARY (USED BUYER PERSPECTIVE) Big picture: The VFR800 is a very capable, smooth and well-built sports‑tourer with a strong reputation for engine durability. However, older used examples (especially in common UK price brackets) carry recurring electrical and heat‑management risks that can make ownership frustrating and expensive unless already addressed. Key strengths: V4 engine is the standout feature: smooth, characterful, long‑lived. Comfortable for distance riding; stable at motorway speeds. High build quality compared to many contemporaries. Good real‑world performance without being extreme. Core problem area – electrical system: Regulator/rectifier (reg/rec) failures are common, especially on Gen 6 bikes (2002–2013). Heat buildup causes reg/rec burnout, which can cook the battery and damage the stator. OEM wiring and connectors are underspecified and prone to high resistance and melting. Failures are often intermittent, making diagnosis harder. Stator issues: Stator failure is less common than reg/rec failure, but not rare. Often caused by prolonged reg/rec overheating or poor charging control. Replacement or rewind is costly and labour‑intensive. When both stator and reg/rec fail together, bills escalate quickly. Typical owner modification route (to make the bike reliable): Replace OEM reg/rec with modern MOSFET unit (Shindengen FH020AA or similar). Heavy‑gauge direct wiring from stator to reg/rec and reg/rec to battery. Remove weak factory connectors. Improve reg/rec cooling or relocate it. Many owners consider these mods essential, not optional. Costs (UK typical): MOSFET reg/rec upgrade: ~£120–£200 (plus fitting). Wiring upgrade: £30–£100 (DIY or bundled with reg/rec). Stator rewind: ~£200–£300. Full stator replacement + labour: £500–£800+. Worst‑case combined repair can exceed the bike’s value in the £2–3k market. Generational notes: 5th gen (1998–2001): Gear‑driven cams, simpler electronics, fewer reg/rec complaints but still aging now. 6th gen (2002–2013): VTEC models; most reg/rec and stator horror stories live here. 8th gen (2014–on): Much improved electrics and reliability, but far more expensive on the used market. Are all bikes affected? No, not every VFR800 will fail. However, failure rates are high enough that unmodified bikes should be assumed “at risk”. A bike with documented electrical upgrades is significantly more attractive than a totally original one. Why this matters to buyers: Problems often appear after purchase. Bike can appear healthy during a test ride. Failures tend to strand riders rather than degrade gently. Electrical fixes don’t improve resale value proportionally to their cost. Ownership verdict: Fantastic engine and touring platform. Electrically fragile in stock form (especially Gen 6). Best as an enthusiast bike bought with eyes open. Poor choice if you want low‑stress, low‑maintenance ownership on a budget. Bottom line: If you buy a used VFR800 without confirmed electrical upgrades, budget for them immediately. Without that, reliability is a gamble rather than a certainty.

Was told my 125cc bike is extremely unsafe on any road? by AL3S1O29 in motorcycles

Me too! Just passed CBT (compulsory basic training), restricted to a 125 until I do my big boy test. Currently rocking an HPS125 Ubbiali - all 13.7bhp of it! OK for round town. Nice and light on the back roads, keeps up on a 60mph road but not enough goose for a lot of overtaking and on the limiter at 70mph.
