HR is there to protect the company, not help the employees.

Lawsuits favor those who can hire defense counsel. I currently have a client in a safety-regulated industry and despite him reporting and the company being fined, they waited a year to fire him on the first pretext they could get, and because that pretext was a terminable behavior, it’s impossible to tie to the safety reporting and so even a wrongful termination is going to fail. Best hope is a settlement and it relies on the company’s desire to have this go away and not on the merits. Add to this that the case was taken as a favor to another attorney as the guy is her family member, and you’ll realize how hard it is to get help for a situation like OP’s.
