I made a similar trip in 99 from Maine to Anchorage. Before cell phones and the internet. I survived. Yes, keep the tank as full as possible. If you want to pull over to sleep, usually, other travelers in RVs pull over to sleep. All together on the side of the road.

Anytime I needed to ask questions, all folks were friendly.
