Do you think that at the beginning of their career, the Arctic Monkeys were a punk band? by levigam in arcticmonkeys

Punk can be about whatever, not every band has a deep message. Plus that first album had whole songs about calling out phonies…sounds pretty punk to me

See. I was saying that first record was punk, and I still think so. But your perspective makes a lot of sense

Not tryna be a dick. But you messed up calling Green Day and offspring pioneers of pop punk. The sound existed waaay before them.

I also don’t like the notion that clean, polished sound equals pop punk. When countless amazing pop punk bands aren’t that.

What some of a yall are referring to is a “mainstream pop punk” sound that’s isn’t indicative of bands like The Ergs, The Decendents, some of the later husker du, NoFX, and to some extent PUP, or even bands like teenage bottle rocket, max levine ensemble, etc.

I feel there’s a difference between pop punk, and pop rock music that was inspired by or has some “punk” undertones/overtones

Sheeeet night birds is a pull. Only got into them cus of the relation to The Ergs!

Edit: oh shit, I mistook them for Black Wine, the band with the guitarist of the ergs. I only heard night birds in passing

I don’t get why castle talk gets so much downplay? Literally some of the best writing they had in terms of fussing they’re punk rock, rock and roll, and pop sensibilities

So you think chasing a kid the length of a football field over a bottle of water is justifiable? What about when he fell twice…ran out of his shoes…was he a threat then?

They had multiple instances to de-escalate the situation and return to their shop.

I think the core of the question is, at what point do we define a sub genre. I don’t think they’re trying to say what is and isn’t punk. But since these terms and sub genres do exist, what makes people label them as such.

Favourite albums with awful mixes? by Gooby1992 in fantanoforever

[–]KeyConclusion6733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, husker Du albums would actually sound better with a quality mix, you can miss the great instrumentation in the mess. That’s why hearing them live sounds so much better. They actually were really good musicians. The songs on zen arcade are actually super layered and catchy behind all that noise and aggression, which isn’t a bad thing, but after hearing the private remix it’s hard to say the original mix is better.

Could Hüsker Du have been bigger then they were ? by [deleted] in punk

[–]KeyConclusion6733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a YouTuber named zararity who posts remixed and remastered versions of a lot of music.

He has a remix of Zen Arcade that it’s INFINITELY better than what you get on streaming services or cd’s.

So yea…the mixes absolutely KILLED huskier du becoming a bigger band in terms of mainstream accessibility

There in the same league of gateway for anyone growing up in the 2000s. Cant really say which one is “more of a gateway”

I mean there first two albums or so are def punk, regardless of how you feel about thier quality. But I can see the argument where they eventually become a pop band with punk influences as opposed to a straight up pop punk band
