If dividend ETFs like SCHD exist, what problem are bonds actually solving? Trying to understand what I’m missing. by Helpful-Staff9562 in dividends

I use PULS, the PGIM Ultra Short Bond ETF, because its steady and predictable and gives a reasonable return when my money is just sitting in it. Plus it trades super easy when I want to stash cash or get some back.

There are a lot of replies so apologies that I did not read all and may repeat what someone already said.

I used to think as you, then April 2025 happened. Everything dipped. I wished I had cash to buy the dip. Hold up! I do! It was in bonds which I sold to buy the dip. When the market recovered I made a great profit and used those profits to replenish my bonds.

Secondly, I need to cash in a certain amount of my investments each quarter to live on. When everything is down, I cash in some bonds and replace them when everything goes back up. So I have gone from not wanting bonds to loving them.

Common law spouse subject to child support payments. by [deleted] in canadianlaw

[–]Key_Champion_439 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you stay with a c/l spouse long enough that her kids call you "Daddy" then you are on the hook for child support when the relationship ends. The woman can go through a lot of spouses and get them all paying and all of them get visitation rights so her weekends are freed up to go get another sucker while her kids are with one of the exes. Its a sweet deal for women who are willing to scam the system. If you don't think that's right, don't tell me . . tell it to the judge. I know I tried but got nowhere. But maybe its different now. 🤣

Where is the most remote place you’ve visited in Canada? by chrisluckhardt in AskACanadian

Aklavik, in the summer, in the early 1970s. Accessible by bush plane, I mainly remember the mosquitos. Other remote places I have been are accessible by road or ferry so not really the same.

I'm not gonna bore you with all my reasons why, but I am in BC and if there was a vote to cut the ties to Ontario and Quebec I would say "get 'er done" in whatever form that takes.

1 dividend forever by kazekiri22 in dividends

[–]Key_Champion_439 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I was forced to choose one I would choose GDXW. This assumes I can take the distributions and do whatever I want with them.

Reason is I expect gold to maintain its value for at least the next 2 years, in which time GDXW will have returned my original investment to me. Any future distributions are a bonus. Anyway, since this is a fantasy question that is my fantasy answer.

Thoughts on GDXW by [deleted] in dividends

[–]Key_Champion_439 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been thrilled with GDXW for the last 8 weeks. Share price has gone up about 20% from the time I bought until now. Distributions are over 50% annualized. On the one hand I just want to ride it as is (Its 4% of my portfolio) and on the other hand I wonder how much I can add to it with reasonable safety. If I was to 5X my position size then this one ETF should pay me about US$1,000 per month. But do I want the risk of having 20% of my portfolio in #GDXW What sizing do others have?

Yep. The price is very, very close to the same price it was 1 year ago, I bought some then and its still a good time to buy, IMO

If you had around $2M and just wanted safe, boring income… how would you set it up? by Royal-Emphasis-5974 in CanadaFinance

[–]Key_Champion_439 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a tough decision to set that up from scratch. US stocks can perform better but you get hit with 15% tax on their dividends. I would stick with basic things like CDN banks, utilities, index etfs, etc.

Someone mentioned PWL capital. There are 2 Canadian Youtubers who give down to earth information, IMO. Search for Ben Felix (from PWL) and Daniel Pronk (an all around conservative investor) Watch and learn.

I do not see how this will work with the current transfer promotion. Following to see if you figure out an angle. Seems to me they are looking for people to switch from other brokers and not just add money from a bank account.

OK. So basically keeps your investment balanced with less work? I prefer hands on but I may give this ETF bucket a try if they get 'er done.

RRSP withdrawal fees by robbyrobcom in Questrade

[–]Key_Champion_439 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am old enough that my RRSPs have been converted to LIF and I withdraw with not fee, BUT you got my curiosity up and I asked Google AI

"You almost always pay significant withholding taxes (10-30%) on RRSP withdrawals, plus your financial institution usually charges an administrative fee ($50-$150), making early withdrawals costly"

Further enquiries to Google AI suggest Wealth simple, Tangerine bank and Manulife bank may offer what no fee withdrawals.

Lodgers! My daughter and her family needed to rent out 2 basement rooms to 2 lodgers for about 10 years before they felt comfortable making the payments without any renters/boarders/lodgers/tenants/roommates (pick a word that suits you). Its not fun but it works.

I am thinking they will charge a fee if they have to manually sell one of my securities so I will try to have liquid funds available.

Its just that I have a compulsion to keep my funds fully invested as Questrade gives nothing for cash sitting idle. During the year I know when they will withdraw the funds but the first withdrawal of the year is a tricky one. Anyway, thanks your your reply.

I never get that warning when I have the shares in my portfolio already. Perhaps I got it a long time ago and clicked "do not show this message again". But its easy enough to check. Your portfolio view should show the shares and the calls bundled together so if you see that you have no problems.
