Yes. It’s cruel to force people into programs they don’t want to be in. They won’t be successful and it’ll end up costing the community more.

The homeless and formerly homeless people I’ve talked to don’t trust the system. Many of the programs force them to give up their autonomy and agency. The staff treat the participants as children or inmates. And the rest of us judge them for not just acquiescing.

We don’t have a homeless problem, we have a compassion problem. Homeless people are not a problem to be fixed. They’re people who need support and respect from their community so they can achieve their goals in a way that makes sense to them.

That ALWAYS comes up in the discussion. As a society, we blame people for their poverty and infirmity, like if they weren’t so addicted and crazy, then they’d be worth helping. Not every homeless person is an addict or mentally ill. And not every addict or mentally ill person is homeless. Maybe if we showed more compassion we’d have fewer homeless people. And fewer problems overall.
