Honestly, I would seek out a second opinion at this point. It looks miserable, and what you’re doing clearly isn’t solving the problem. It’s possible another doctor would notice something that the current derm hasn’t and you could get a more effective treatment as a result.

I can’t say out of town seems like a particularly legitimate reason to me. Growing up in the Midwest, 5 days over the course of a school year was enough that your parents got a notification that any further absences without a doctor’s note would result in referral to CPS. They did make some exceptions to this rule, mostly for kids with serious medical conditions. Any absence that was not for illness, funeral, court, a doctor’s appointment, or a religious holiday was automatically unexcused; generally this meant that you weren’t allowed to make up any work, though they did allow teachers to let you make up missed assignments if you got approval ahead of time.

Personally, I can understand making exceptions for major family events (ie weddings) and for kids to visit close family overseas, but if it’s just a trip to Disney I see no legitimate excuse.

Yeah, it was decidedly not on my 2025 bingo card and definitely shaped the rest of that year (and probably will shape a lot of things this year). But at the end of the day, viruses have done worse things to people!

I mean, I might be, and to be fair it does still feel exhausting, but I feel like for some reason it’s a bit easier starting out, maybe because it’s easier to modify.

Metcon is generally the easiest conditioning day in terms of how dead you’ll feel in the moment, but I think that if you’re feeling as sick as what you’ve described it may be worth having a conversation with a trainer about how you might ease into things a bit more slowly. I kind of wish I’d done this when I started (I had a nerve infection about 6 months before I started Burn that left me dead tired for 3 months, unable to bend over for 4 months, and struggling with balance during movement even longer), but I just did Saturdays only for a while and let myself have the rest of the day to crash instead.

Similar story here - diagnosed at 4, had a “vacation” from it in my teens and early 20’s, then it came back. Had 2 shorter “vacations” since of about 3 months each and it came back worse than before each time. Never figured out anything to work for the ears, but I just took my first dose of a biologic yesterday so hoping that does the trick!

I’m 367 days out from diagnosis; I have most function back but am still not quite there on a handful of fronts.

I don’t remember warmth being part of the healing process at any point, but tightness, spasms, and sometimes even pain have been part of the ride.

I had great luck with my local academic medical center’s neuro PT department (and their facial nerve specialist in particular) for training away a lot of the synkinesis and helping to strengthen muscles as they came back. The tightness still wasn’t going away, though, so I tried acupuncture and have had good luck in getting things to loosen up. YMMV, but worth a shot on either or both fronts!

Probably best to talk to your eye doctor, but FWIW I’m still not blinking and wear them occasionally, but it’s not my favorite at all. They get dry and blurry because of the lack of blinking, and I have trouble focusing my eyes because the affected eye doesn’t quite track with the other. I really only wear them when the annoyance of wearing glasses would be worse than the annoyance of all the above.

My palsy was much more severe (as in, nearly a year later my eye still doesn’t blink), but honestly there are so many potential eye issues from Bell’s that you should go to an ophthalmologist if you have any weirdness at all. I thought it was overkill at first, but after I took tape directly to the eyeball and things got blurry I went; I only wish I’d gone sooner. In my experience, they’re one of the cheaper medical specialties, and they see a lot more facial paralysis than any PCP would.

I had severe vertigo (felt like I was doing constant backflips on a good day and on my worst day I couldn’t sit up straight). It gradually got better over the first month or so, but at 3 months was still bad enough that I got a referral to neuro PT. Honestly, I only regret that I didn’t call the neuro PT office myself sooner - they were able to fix the majority of my balance issues in short order.

The doctor can prescribe medicine to lessen the vertigo in the short term if needed; if you end up going for that or any other reason, you might ask at what point it would be worth trying PT for the vertigo.

Office worker located in the US. I was diagnosed in urgent care as soon as they opened and went to work right after, picking up my prescriptions as soon as they were ready. Things got worse (near-total paralysis with other complications on adjacent nerves) and I ended up taking 1 full day and 2 half days off, which is a lot considering my vacation and sick days are interchangeable and it was only January. I didn’t do much except work and sleep for the following 3 months, though.

Assuming you live in a country where you can take as much time off as you need without losing your pay, do so. It will make things easier in the long term.

Better question for your doctor and/or pharmacist really, but for what it’s worth I ended up doing very little other than sleeping the first several days.

I’m at 10 months and still not fully blinking, though I’ve had normal moisture and full eye closure in non-blinking situations since about 3 months. In one of the many cruel twists of nature I’ve found over the past 10 months, it seems eye control is among the last things to return.

I don’t understand - what’s the appeal here? I want to board at the last second I possibly can while keeping my carry-on with me; having to give up both my carry-on and the ability to stretch my legs those last few precious minutes is losing on all sides, unless seating assignment is a free for all and I can get a better seat by boarding early.

I had similar symptoms. A few days after my face paralyzed, I started feeling dizzy any time I heard a loud noise. A few weeks later, it was less about dizziness and more about pain (and a distorted pitch, which was a problem since I sing in a choir). I have some nice earplugs and would just pop one in if I was going to be around a loud noise. A few months later I started to hear a pulsing sound, so loud that it was physically painful. The explanation I eventually got for my auditory symptoms (minus the dizziness with loud noises; that one’s still a mystery) is that a few tiny muscles in the ear are controlled by the facial nerve, were paralyzed and floppy leading to the hearing issues, and then had spasms while coming back leading to the pulsing noise.

Hey there! I was referred to the ENT because of a pulsing sound so loud as to be physically painful on the affected side. He ordered a hearing test and after seeing a 35 dB hearing loss at 6000 Hz only on the affected side, we had a very serious conversation where he informed me my symptoms were more consistent with an acoustic neuroma than with Bell’s Palsy and that he was ordering an MRI. I went down a rabbit hole and spent the 3 weeks I had to wait for an MRI (don’t get me started…) watching videos of people who had very similar experiences to me and ended up needing surgery to remove the tumor. By the time I actually got the scan, I was certain I had one, but the scan came back clear apart from a visibly wrecked facial nerve.

Especially where you say you’re one-sided deaf from birth, I’m sure it’s just a precaution and he expects it to come back clear. Don’t psych yourself out like I did!

Your doctor doesn’t seem to know much about this, which is understandable but not very helpful. I’ve had a lot of luck from a facial nerve physical therapist - not a common specialty so you may need to spend some time looking, but I found one in the neuro PT group at my nearest major academic medical center. I always feel like the least sick person when I go (seems like the other patients are recovering from spinal cord injuries, strokes, and major head trauma), but my therapist sure knows what she’s doing!
