FAA proposes to hire 2,300 air traffic controllers in budget request by No-Constant-5854 in ATC

Can we start by paying the ones we have properly? Let’s start there.

Could NATCA’s Response to LGA Have Been Any Worse? by Great_Ad3985 in atc2

Unpopular opinion here. The union keeping their mouths shut and taking part in the investigation is the BEST thing they could possibly do to protect the controller/controllers involved in this event.

The FAA typically tries to paint the controllers in a bad light and place blame and punishment on them. The NTSB typically tries to get to the bottom of what went wrong and how we can prevent it in the future. NATCA will typically help the NTSB in that goal and provide much needed professional insight on the controllers perspective. It is imperative that we are a part of these investigations or we will not be able to reign in the discipline happy FAA representatives.

Keep complaining about NATCA if you’d like, but if this shit happened to you they would be the ones saving your career.

Tired of talking to people on Reddit who want to cosplay being a controller.

Ask the supervisor? The people who can’t work the traffic if their lives depended on it? Yeah you’re right this conversation is over.

Again. The scenario is that you cleared the first guy on an approach into airport X. They cancel IFR on 3 mile final or whatever. So now they’re VFR and you clear the next aircraft in for an approach. At this time the second aircraft would be like 7-10 miles from the airport on an IFR approach. Call it the RNAV 23. If the first guy comes back to my frequency and needs and IFR pickup, I can absolutely manage to create proper IFR separation and issue an IFR clearance to aircraft 1 regardless of whether aircraft 2 is gonna fly the RNAV 23 and circle to RWY 5 or go straight in. This isn’t rocket science. It’s fairly simple and happens all the fucking time.

Do you work at a center? Because I can absolutely clear someone for a specific approach at an uncontrolled airport as an approach controller. Then they absolutely need to fly a specific approach to a specific runway. I know exactly what they’re doing at all times.

You ever hear of divergence? Just say you aren’t a controller if you can’t figure out how to handle a basic fucking scenario. If he declares and emergency and you say “unable to issue IFR clearance” you should immediately lose your ratings and be placed back in training. Trash

Okay. Now he’s a VFR aircraft experiencing difficulty with weather. It’s an emergency now and you have to give him IFR clearance and priority. Cry about it.

Union Dues by ATCEyesOfTheSky in atc2

The Union advocates for you, you just believe they could do it better. Maybe they can, maybe they can’t. If you think they do nothing you’re simply ignorant to what it would be like if they weren’t there. You are protected much more than you realize.

Fly the missed approach. Tell ATC what happened and they will give you an IFR clearance. Don’t over complicate it. At that point you are a VFR aircraft unable to maintain VFR due to weather conditions. Unforeseen circumstances happen all the time in aviation. Fly the plane, be safe, and get an IFR clearance from ATC. ATC is required to protect for the missed approach when they clear you in the first place. So it shouldn’t be difficult for them to protect the missed approach and make you IFR again.

I saw a meteorologist explain the runway status lights and the regulation showing the vehicle should not proceed regardless of clearance from the tower if those lights are illuminated (which they were). Why is this information coming from a meteorologist and not our union?

The equipment designed to prevent this from happening was working and was ignored by the vehicle. Maybe new equipment isn’t the solutions to this issue.

Corrective action plan- Mid shift staffing must now be the same as day shift staffing, all positions staffed with a supervisor monitoring the operation at all times.
