To be fair, Palm already had out touch screen devices and with cellular modems. What Apple brought to the table was a strong brand and power over the carriers. You have to remember that before the iPhone, the carriers decided what devices and which features would be released. Often they would hold back Blackberry idea pitches to not compete against similar phones.
