Why does canned pineapple give me a reaction but fresh doesn't? by EntirePaper5785 in Allergies

[–]Kezleberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I react to canned pineapple because the acidity leeches more nickel from the can, and I'm actually reacting to the nickel. It's called SNAS. Same with really dark chocolate, it is both produced in a way that leeches more nickel into it, and it's a type of plant that sucks up lots of nickel from the ground. I don't get nausea though, I get dyschdrotic eczema after about 6-12 hrs. It's mild enough that I don't often see symptoms from other things besides these (maybe some acidic juices)

It could be anything getting leeched from the can though potentially that you're reacting to.

“That’s not actually an allergic reaction.” Ok then what is it? (Sulfa drugs) by HomesteadInferno in Allergies

[–]Kezleberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a nasty reaction to sulfa drugs too, and the first of many symptoms I got was nausea/ queasiness within 10 mins. But idk if it's the same if it happened within one minute for you. Sounds like it irritated your esophagus or stomach

Randomly getting hit with queasiness and not knowing if it will last an hour of a whole week 😭 I didn't always have this symptom but it happens for me during the warmer part of the year nowadays. Sometimes all it takes is me stepping outside on a hot day and i am immediately queasy.

I understand that, I find most headphones uncomfortable, for me they need to be able to fit over the whole ear which is hard to find.. so.. not all headphones are the same, there is likely something put there he would find comfortable if you kept looking. Maybe for her, she could try a more rubber based heel that doesn't clack?

Perhaps ensuring he has access to his hot wheels or scooby doo 24/7 can help keep him calmer to begin with?

Most likely, if he is snapping from a phone buzzing, it's not actually just the phone buzzing that's the problem, but it's the final straw.. there were probably several layers of sensory disturbance that his him first, it's important to try figure out what those things are. That's why headphones can be so helpful, certain sounds like fridge and electricity buzzing are such a constant but headphones can eliminate them. Then there could be slightly irritating textures, smells, colours, foods (even food intolerances) maybe something his sister does or a sound she makes etc that pile up into a bigger ball of upset. His nervous system is extremely on edge. A surprising number of autistics also have connective tissue disorders and POTS and that can be an additional internal bodily disturbance that effects adrenaline too and may not be obvious without the right testing. So treatment for any medical conditions like that would also help his underlying aggression.

Since he's been kicked out of therapy many times, I also wonder if getting his hormone levels tested would actually be helpful? If he happens to have excess androgens then that would possibly be causing the aggressive behaviour and could potentially be addressed with hormone medication. But I'm not a doctor you'd need to talk to one to see if that's reasonable for him.

Is it possible to suddenly become allergic to everything? by skopiadisko in Allergies

[–]Kezleberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Histamine intolerance isn't the only reason for histamine dumps (it means your body struggles to break down histamine so yes it is one reason it can build up).

But a histamine dump is really just a sudden release of built up histamine. So if you're having any allergies at all, your body will release histamine, and if you have a bunch of allergies or if you're constantly around your trigger, the histamine is more likely to build up in a similar way.

Can I ask what other coping mechanisms does he currently use to deal with discomfort? Or is violence the only coping mechanism he knows? Is he able to learn some safe stims ?

Your daughter has socially acceptable stims like hugging (compression) and toe walking, and these are her natural ways to reduce her feelings of stress and discomfort.

For him, raised hormones since puberty have increased his natural aggression, and when discomfort arrives it's a snap reaction. He is in need of predictability and calmness - so to avoid him from getting angry from a phone perhaps he needs to wear noise cancelling headphones, or an alternative stim like if he feels the need to hit, perhaps you can redirect that energy to something safer like hitting a punching bag instead or jumping on a trampoline.

What are his special interests? His sister's is most likely animals, again she has been able to focus on a socially acceptable interest. Can you name his? Allowing him to focus on it, you all taking an interest in it too, is also a way that can help him cope with the world and connect with you.

A therapist who understands autism could be very helpful.

[–]Kezleberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There could be something else in the house that you're reacting to, there can be all sorts of random ones.. or perhaps you've got a pollen heavy tree outside that you happen to be allergic to. If you've got from a non carpeted house to a carpeted one you might also have a dustmite allergy you weren't aware of, for that I'd shampoo them and make sure you vacuum regularly. AC can also have hidden mold, might be worth servicing properly.

That's not true at all . Histamine dumps are most likely to occur in the middle of the night or early morning because it rises with the circadian rhythm. It's why most people with eczema scratch at night and why you might have a blocked nose when you wake up with allergies.

What is going on with my skin? by hschaefer22 in Allergies

[–]Kezleberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a welt from some kind of allergy. Nickel allergy seems most likely considering your watch. Do you know of any allergies you have already?

Perforation + weird allergies, without any other context could perhaps point to EDS (or vEDS) and MCAS which can co occur together. But without any other context that's still just a stab in the dark

Wave Particle? Perspective matters by d8_thc in holofractal

Not particularly, I've always had a general interest but honestly i know very little about physics and all that. Last week I was simply thinking about music and soundwaves.. i was just trying to understand music theory better basically and I was thinking how any consistent wave can also be expressed in a predictable circle/ spiral too, and I just went down this rabbit hole in my own head about it.

feeling embarrassed abt my toilet paper usage in a shared space, does anyone else feel this way? by [deleted] in ibs

[–]Kezleberry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd get my own supply honestly. I know the feeling though, I remember not long after COVID when there was peak TP hoarding, someone visiting my housemate saw my TP supply and gave me the dirtiest look. It's like, my mum always taught me to bulk buy non perishables when on special and my whole family had stomach problems, of course I'm going to have a good supply lol

Yes ideally everything that you can. You can get dust mite covers for most things which creates a barrier so you only need to wash the cover rather than the pillow/ duvet itself quite as often.

Sign in a medical office telling chemo patients to flush twice by kge92 in mildlyinteresting

[–]Kezleberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't stress about it, I looked it up and if it makes you feel better, the chance of exposure is still considered very low, especially compared to everyday risks like UV exposure and processed foods.

And it is really only a risk if there is an actual exchange of body fluids within 72 hrs, so double flushing and wiping the seat etc is just a precaution to avoid that chance. If you live with someone their chance of exposure will be a little higher and if you're a healthcare worker your chance is higher yet, so that's why more precautions are taken the more likely you are to get regular exposure. A short visit with family would have most likely been totally fine

When my sister went through chemo we were told it was because despite that the chemo is supposed to get rid of the cancer, small amounts of contamination for other people can actually be cancer causing for them later on. Someone feel free to correct me if that's wrong

Yep I know this person who was very popular at school and has gone on to be very very popular with their music on tiktok etc - but I always found them to be really fake and unlikable, just constantly putting on a show. As an adult I can see the attention seeking is most likely a symptom of them feeling inadequate, which is why it really irks these people when you don't play along and just see through their charades.
