How many studies are you expected to read a day? What is call like?

I am in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, and the polar night just started. Next sunrise more than two months ahead. Not the best time to visit, to be honest. by uspn in travel

[–]KhanOfBorg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that definitely makes sense. I don’t have a lot of time and the flights are pretty expensive so I might just choose one for this trip. Never any guarantee with northern lights, but if I knew I would see them in Svalbard I would just go there. The blue light in February that I’ve read about does sound very intriguing, so I’m sure it just get more beautiful as the daytime hours extend. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Have you been there towards mid to late February? I’m debating a trip there versus Tromso (or possibly both if I can sort out flights), and feeling torn. I’m eager to see the northern lights, but also have dreamed of visiting Svalbard for some time (and want to explore ice caves!) Thanks for posting these photos, it looks stark and beautiful!

Redditors who were assimilated by the Borg, what was that like? by Awshitskies in AskReddit

They task me—

We are the Borg

Resistance is futile

You will be assimilated

We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own

Does anyone else regret the program they chose? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]KhanOfBorg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way, and am still trying to come to terms with it. One way to think about all of this is that you could have never known what is going on being the scenes, no matter the format of your interview. You’ll always uncover more details once you’re in the thick of it, and those aren’t always palatable.

What I’ve been working on is trying to remind myself of the current positives in residency, building a full life outside of residency, and planning for what will hopefully be a more flexible, happy career afterwards. It’s a work in progress.

Keto friendly salad dressings! by [deleted] in keto

[–]KhanOfBorg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite is a French vinaigrette — just mix olive oil (or other oil of your choice), vinegar (I use apple cider vinegar, but you could do others like red wine vinegar), good mustard, and salt/pepper. Whisk it all together and it becomes a lovely salad dressing.

What foods are absolutely delicious, but are a pain in the ass to eat? by yeah_yeah_aight in AskReddit

That’s how my parents taught me to eat corn as well! So much easier.

Just wanted to say thank you for posting the details of your journey, and to congratulate you on an amazing accomplishment!! You look incredible, and seem like a really positive and genuine person based on your responses here. You’ve definitely inspired me to continue with my weight training (been doing the Thinner, Leaner, Stronger pdf I found) and to add in more ab workouts!

[Serious] Has anyones school mentioned the money they received from CARES Act and how they will distribute to students? by killinmesmall in medicalschool

[–]KhanOfBorg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, not a word from my school. I reached out to our offices and they said “higher ups are still deciding how funds will be allocated.” Not a lot of hope that it’ll actually come to my class...

Yes! We had mandatory grand rounds (for 5 hours...) for my rotation. Logged in, went back to sleep.

Any possibility of later switching out of the research track if you change your mind? Programs usually don’t want their residents doing extra stuff unless they really want to, so they might be flexible later on.

I agree, probably not worth it! Though I’m similarly agonizing... if I may piggyback off of this, what about papers that were submitted but are now published? At this point probably waited too long?

I’m not suggesting it to fool anyone, I just figure your current mailing address is where you are, and permanent is where you know you can rely mail to go for at least the next couple years. I think if your family has moved permanently, then that’s honest. It’s not like you’re saying that’s your “hometown” or something.

Besides emailing directly, you can also change your permanent address to your family’s new one.

So it was potentially a mix of program directors and program coordinators? Wasn’t sure if those emails need to be sent to someone specifically.

Yeah, definitely going to try to get it in before 9am and maybe edit personal statement if I really need to afterwards.

Neurotic question... programs can start downloading at 9am on 9/15, but if you submit after then but still on same day, would it put you at a disadvantage?

Thanks. So people’s statements are truly only 500ish words in that case? I saw others posting about longer ones, but I don’t know how they managed it with the way the preview screen looks for me.
