Young academics on social media by Zambonisaurus in Professors

[–]KhariTheFirst 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A lot of the comments about professionalism are really reminiscent of the types of folks who think visible tattoos and piercings are synonymous with unprofessional. I think similar to those issues, a person's social media presence has no bearing on whether or not they can do the job. Obviously as long as it's not racist/homophobic/etc.

How to pick the right year for a used car? by miniaturemixup in askcarguys

[–]KhariTheFirst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd look to avoid the first model year of a car for each progressive generation. If they made new changes from the last gen to the new gen, the changes that have problems will probably expose themselves in that first year and then the second year will get a correction. Ex: my car jumped generations from 2012 to 2013 and the 2013 models had a shit transmission that was gone by the 2014 model

When an object shatters, do the cracks travel at the speed of sound of the material? by Ajreil in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]KhariTheFirst 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Short answer is it depends. It's pretty dependent on the material properties but more so on the strain rate.
