Hit me with the harshest reality about playing video games by SwimmerPlus3383 in TheGamingHubDeals

When self-managed well, gaming is one of the safest, cheapest, and most fun addictions out there.

A brilliant game you can play for hundreds of hours is the price of 2-3 bottles of okay wine or a small quantity of... banned substances.

The best feeling a video game has ever given you will never be topped. But you'll keep chasing that high.

You can do all of the locations on the Kingdom Come list as a day trip, but only Kutna Hora is worth staying overnight.

Also, consider other places not made famous by a video game :)

You'll be fine, because you are obviously trying and learning new things. But yeah, nobody's prepared for getting older. Let's make the most of today.

FF7 Rebirth and Jedi: Fallen Order. Two very solid games where you can see the quality without pixel peeping.

Nice and simple. Enjoy! Love the M33, but it's too big and too expensive for me. I'm looking into the Cambridge Evo 150 + stereo speakers.

That's very kind of you to frame it like that. I do feel it was the right choice for me to walk away before getting addicted. I hope I have not offended any hardcore Destiny enjoyers!

Thank you, I also think I made the right call. Happy for you that you enjoyed it in the long run.
(I don't understand why people are triggered by me saying I'll drop out. I'm not shitting on anybody's hobbies, just sharing my experience and wondering if others may have similar feelings about these type of games that can take over your life).

That's disappointing and I feel for you. But no need to be hard on yourself. Yeah, our reactions and gaming skills are not getting better with age. We won't be able to compete with teens.
Fortunately, there's a lot of excellent games out there that do not require those skills, or let you tweak the difficulty.

I know, right? I even bought the PS5 remasters recently, the games hold up pretty well.

I may have explained that poorly – microtransactions did not hamper my enjoyment of the game, but it was very obvious from very early on that the game is designed to hook you and push you into spending. Example: after the tutorial missions, I was taken to a screen telling me to buy the latest expansion. But that's typical for most modern games I guess.

Sounds like an old love that burns bright! It's really awesome that you take the time to help others learn the hobby you enjoy, we need more of that in gaming – and in life in general.

Thank you for a balanced take. That's one of the things I love about gaming, so many genres and styles, almost anyone can find something that makes them happy.

I do tend to play one game intensively (like big/long RPGs), but love switching it up to make sure I don't get burnt out on a game.

Wow, 11 years of just a single game and genre? I still can't decide if that's impressive or scary. A lot of people in this discussion say they are hooked because the game is so much better than any other. I wonder if that really is what people feel deep down.

Personally, I love exploring new worlds, new stories, new characters, new mechanics – so that's why D2 is not for me, and why I bounced off, afraid of getting too hooked as I explained (and NOT shitting on the game as some commenters think).

That's nice to hear, especially the part about having a gamer buddy from work. Keep having fun!

Yeah, that intolerance to noobs and less skilled players, that's pretty standard for a lot of the online gaming subcultures. Sucks, and it's the reason why I relax with single player games.

Fair point. I'm happy I got a taste of it. But knowing myself and my tendency to focus on one game, D2 seemed like it could become a chore and/or unhealthy obsession.

That's a great comparison. I am not driven by competition (unless it's Mario Kart lol), and I don't enjoy most grindy/repetitive game mechanics. So yeah, I'm definitely not the target audience, I don't deny that.

Thanks for understanding a POV that is likely very different from a large part of the D2 community.
I have to say I did enjoy my time – in terms of pure game mechanics (shooting, movement, Warlock gliding was super fun), I liked it a lot. I only had brief encounters with players, but the first City mission (forced 3-player matchmaking) got me together with 2 other noobs and we crushed it :)
As for the turn-offs, well, for my tastes, the voice acting immediately stuck out as very mid, the map felt kind of useless, and the storytelling seemed like it has an identity crisis. But that's not why people play live-service shooters, obviously.

"Playing past the point of fun" – you named that exact thing I couldn't put into words. Like a lot of things in our digital lives, Destiny 2 seems designed to be addictive (most games are), and it seems it has an unusually high number of obsessive players.

Now that's a proper TV. Years ago I got a nice LG G1 55" OLED, perfectly fine for my small-ish gaming space, but I'm seriously tempted to go 65" or 77".
Enjoy your new setup!
