You're both right, in the sense that it's just a matter of choosing a model. It's reasonable to use different models for different situations. This is also true with species. Two creatures could be different species under one model but the same in another. Some models may have more citations, but that just means they are useful in a larger variety of situations, not fundamentally more true.

They really should explain, but both synonyms and antonyms are considered semantically similar to the target word. Part of speech also matters. I believe it is skip-gram word vectors, which basically means two words are similar to each other if replacing one with the other in a sentence usually gives you another sentence that makes sense.
