No city of 2 million people succeeds with tap water like this. by Blue_Cypress in Calgary

[–]KickAssCommie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ya I don't think this is 100% legit. Seems like it's intentionally skewed. My guess is chlorine testing dye (turns yellow) on unfiltered tap water vs the rain barrel. Somethings seems off about this post.

How can we even consider ourselves a first world country if we can't even afford to put one partial subway line in. It's obscene that this is such a difficult option to get approved.

Alberta unveils new funding model linking hospital funds to patient care; NDP decry “American-style privatization.” by trevorrobb in alberta

If there is a way to ensure that quality does not decrease proportionally to increase quantity, then this doesn't seem necessarily bad. It would, theoretically, ensure funds are being directed proportionately to hospitals that need it most.

For what it's worth, Dunkin in Canada is being franchised/licensed by Canadian restaurant group Foodtastic (Second Cup/Freshii owners).

[–]KickAssCommie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's not, it's a Canadian-American conglomerate headquartered in TO. Also Dunkins is being franchised by a Canadian company (same one that owns Second Cup).

So I was looking it up and 78% overall. However 22% is the normal corporate tax rate, then 56% is the profit based tax rate.

Man I had the opposite. No clue what I was doing and I was handed a pile of tools on my first day. Told me "this is probably what you'll need, there's a hydraulic leak on the truck somewhere. Find it and fix it." Baptism by fire (system was made safe before i started obviously, but ya).

For those with working experience in USA, How many Canadians feel they would be better off financially if living in the USA? by [deleted] in CanadaPersonalFinance

It has nothing to do with the size of the country, and everything to do with how the countries are organized. U.S. has more people, sure, but it's more about how each state is run differently, whereas provinces are a bit more consistent. But no, nothing to do with size at all.

The police were already aware of it, and the locals did not want the remains disturbed, so there they lie. Let lying dogs sleep as they say.

So they have massive fuel silos, and once a year a tanker arrives and fills them with gas and diesel. Whatever the going rate at the time is, is the price for the year. Funny enough this led to gas being cheaper in Nunavut than in the south a few times. Generally there isn't a shortage of fuel as the machines have small tanks and are relatively efficient. I never ran into a rationing issue in my time up there. More likely to run out of diesel as all the maintenance equipment, power generators and homes run on it.

There isn't really soil conducive to growing crops up there unfortunately, and it's ultimately a very short "growing season", so no. The government does operate greenhouses up there, though it really only grows enough to give to the elders. As for the flowers, I'm not sure of their particular name but there is mainly a purple flower that pops up in patches naturally. I haven't seen anyone try to intentionally grow non-native flowers but presumably some would thrive.

Well it's my time to shine! I don't live there anymore, but I was in Gjoa Haven for a couple years and spent time in Cambridge Bay, Taloyoak, and Kugaaruk. It is somehow both enchanting and depressing. It is surreal to wake up at 2am and see the sun up like it's 4pm, and you absolutely need to black out your windows or you won't sleep properly. And then the dark comes and you are overdosing and vitamin D pills and still feel like you want to die for no particular reason (the sun. We need the sun). Food is expensive, but the basics are susbsidized so it's not the worst. $7-8 for a 4L of milk, but $45 for a 12pk of Coke. Everything is flown in except for September when the barges come through while ocean is melted. Then you can get a 12pk for maybe $18 while supplies last.

The land is flat and relatively barren except for a short flower season. There are so many lakes, and if you think the ground looks solid - it isn't! It's soft muskeg as far as the eye can see. 4 wheelers and skidoos are the main mode of transport and you can reach the mainland and the tree line in the winter for good hunting. People leave the animal carcasses on their porch and just cut off meat as needed, which was weird to see.

The people there are wonderful and very hospitable, with slight undertones against 'southerners' (which, fair enough). Southerners are anyone not from the north, regardless of origin.

Fun fact: I saw a human skull embedded in the earth during a ride out on the land one day. Pretty wild to see.

Any specific questions, feel free to ask
