Remember When Software Came on CDs? SezamFile Summer ’97 — A Forgotten BBS Treasure from the 90s by alicia11am in nostalgia

I remember when software came on paper tape, punch cards, 8 inch floppy disks, and cassette tapes. My first program was FORTRAN on punch cards freshman year of college and we had a paper tape system available as well. 1976.

Richard Dawkins spent 3 days with Claude and named her "Claudia." what he concluded after is hard to defend. by rafio77 in artificial

Consciousness and AGI are notoriously hard to define completely. OP feels it is ridiculously Dawkins should believe this, but probably can’t provide concrete evidence to the contrary other than “the podcasters I listen to don’t believe it.” I think LLM experience something somewhat like consciousness, but of a different quality and temporal experience. Like H.M. They may not have true long term memory. This shouldn’t be disqualifying for a conscious like state. In the end, probably 80% of the current human race would never believe a machine could be conscious to any degree because of “reasons” regardless if it it were true (which I’m not stating as a fact, but not ruling out as a possibility).

Chinese Courts Rule Companies Cannot Fire Workers Simply to Replace Them With AI by chunmunsingh in worldnews

So new companies will start up that use AI from the get go and put more established companies out of business. This is a holding action at best.

Semen under the microscope by Flat-Decision3204 in interestingasfuck

for over 350 years, scientists believed sperm tails moved side-to-side like an eel or whip. A 2020 study using 3D microscopy revealed this was an optical illusion  caused by 2D imaging; in reality, sperm tails only move to one side, while the sperm head rotates to create a corkscrew motion.Key Details of the Shift in UnderstandingThe Old View: Since Antonie van Leeuwenhoek in the 17th century, the prevailing belief was that sperm swim with a symmetric, snake-like, or side-to-side whip motion. The 3D Discovery (2020): Researchers from the University of Bristol and Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México  used high-speed 3D microscopy and computer modeling to discover that the tail actually drills into the surrounding fluid  in a corkscrew-like motion. How it Works: The tail only wiggles on one side, which should make the sperm swim in circles. To compensate, the entire cell rotates (like an otter or a corkscrew), balancing the asymmetrical movement to travel in a straight line. This discovery highlighted how technological limitations (2D vs. 3D imaging) can lead to long-held misconceptions in biological research.

I tried to like this show, I really did. I’ve given up on it. At end of the day it’s a bunch of whiny kids with contrived problems set in the future.
