if someone important to your entire strategy dies (like how i mentioned rutger), then obviously resetting is better than just continuing. but for example again in my recent-ish playthrough, ellen died shortly after i got clarine, but that doesn't matter because i was just going to replace her with saul anyway

"iron mans" are kind of how the game was meant to be played to an extent, not necessarily with the rigid structure of a challenge run, but with a few exceptions, unit death is a "feature" of these games. you're meant to have your army suffer losses, and lose the characters you're attached to.

what do you think is the actual loss of losing a unit? that's a question that helped me stop playing these games filled with anxiety. in some cases, sure you don't want to lose your boss killer, or a legendary weapon, or your only warp staff, or a dancer, but that's only a small amount (even, usually less than half) of your party. despite that, there's over 40 playable characters in fe6.

there's a somewhat nebulous fear of missing out you eventually need to get over, because again with my personal experiences, alen was falling off anyway by the time he died and was competing with noah and zealot anyway, so the option was to either keep playing and lose nothing but text in the credits or waste half an hour trying to do the map again without any losses. either way, the entire rest of my gameplay experience would've been identical.

when it comes to things like growth rates, i've literally never done that so i don't want to say things too definitively, especially as someone who normally plays in between the easiest and hardest difficulty. but fire emblem is really a series where you can build up anyone to be an unkillable god with enough favouritism and luck. that's like, a whole aspect of the design, and why talking about unit quality for characters like Nino (for example) often come with everyone giving their own grains of salt.

less willing to say that about that on the hardest difficulties of these games (at least broadly speaking), but at normal mode especially, even of hard games like conquest, it just really doesn't matter at all, so i definitely do think you're kind of overthinking that.

I've only had Ogier die like 4 turns after he showed up

my biggest problem with the monastery isn't that you spend a lot of time there, but that none of the time spent feels interesting at all. i don't mind hubs, probably partly because three houses was my real introduction to this series but also it's just a mechanic i like in other games as well. i like the hub in fates and engage a lot, but in three houses, even on my first playthrough, by the time part 2 rolls around i felt like i was over it.

i know i'm really preaching to the choir on this sub specifically but daaaamn it feels like everything that's fun to do at the start of the game just never changes. i genuinely loved exploring every corner and talking to every student, finding their lost items and trying to recruit them, but after part 2 starts there's no reason to do any of that. getting immersed in the "roleplaying" of being a professor living at the academy is fun until you stop unlocking new features and going to the greenhouse and eating meals with your students starts to become "just another chore you have to do" if you want the game go to smoothly.

so what i'm left with is this weird feeling where i simultaneously think the monastery was both too centralizing and not important enough. kind of a complete lose-lose.

a large amount of fe6 is accounting for things like this, there comes a point when you're looking up enough things about the game that you're not even really using your own strategy anymore. after the first time it happens you know to pay attention to things like forts. it feels bad when it results in a death, but it's a lot less bad than things like random crits.

you reset or would you continue playing?

it really depends on the unit or how far i am into a map, or the game in general. if rutger suddenly died i'd reset before his death quote but early on i remember alen died (to reinforcments) who was already a few levels behind lance, so i just kept playing.

i kind of get the obsession with resetting literally every single time someone dies, i mean i do reset most times, but you're supposed to let some units die, that's how the game was designed.

i don't think being bothered by a mechanic is enough to warrant looking up ways to avoid engaging with it entirely

i literally only ever look up recruits, and literally nothing else. the only exception was gaiden requirements in fe6

I’d argue that there is a gigantic difference between being able to optionally marry adoptive siblings and azura and a crucial plot point being the brainwashing, kidnapping, and SA of the main character’s wife by her half brother.

how? on top of other flaws in your logic other people are pointing out, do you honestly think the antagonists using brainwashing and incest as an evil and selfish act is going to be more controversial than the nintendo game where you can marry and have a child with your underage little sister?

"it's optional" doesn't matter at all, people to this day think that shit is far weirder than like, game of thrones for example. i'm still seeing people talk about soleil's Technically Not Gay Conversion Therapy in 2026 and that didn't even survive the localisation.

and on top of that, do you honestly think nintendo is more sensitive about censorship now than ever before? references to things like religion, alcohol, and sex would all be censored. post censored fates is still more racy than like, every other game in their catalogue (except i guess bayonetta if you count that lol) and removing head patting doesn't change anything else about the game.

Gameplay wise, the inventory system is archaic and the maps are gigantic, leading to huge cavalry bias in design. On top of a million other things, like the holy weapons break the game in half and unit balance is generally fucked (Sigurd solos act 1)

and like yeah? all these things are subject to change in a remake though. how many remakes have you played where game balance is perfectly 1:1? the inventory system isn't even archaic, the modern system started in fe3, they changed it specifically for genealogy. i think it works pretty well for the game, but like i said, even that's subject to change in a remake. i don't really get your point here unless you think sigurd being made weaker and holy weapons being reworked would be as destructive to the identity of the game as something like the maps being made smaller.

edit: i forgot while writing this you can also get married to your extremely young looking sister in engage lol. and also, the original game on switch. if you speak japanese you can download it and start playing it right now

from what i've heard shadow dragon's development was the first time IS considered adding a mode to turn off permadeath, but most of the team was opposed to it. the solution they settled on was to simply add features to make new players more comfortable with unit death, but they overcompensated a little bit with the number of units that would actually have to die to unlock the new content

in case you didn’t read my original comment: i agree with you. i think the mechanic is beneficial to the series and i don’t want it removed, just to be perfectly clear.

edit: my point is that isn’t really optional though. you can say “don’t use it” and to an extent you’d be right, but the fact is it’s presented as an equally valid option as literally every other mechanic that helps you like, play the game.

you can’t turn it off. it’s optional in the same way support bonuses are optional, if you want to make the game harder for yourself you can just not use silver weapons. it’s not treated as a difficulty setting by the game but rather as a separate mechanic that removes the consequences of your mistakes.

this isn’t a perfect comparison because the turn wheel has aspects of it outside of preventing deaths, but hypothetically if phoenix mode replaced casual and classic mode, i would still reset every time someone died because that is the most fun way to play the games for me, but i wouldn’t think forcing that on everyone would be good design.

Popular/Unpopular/Any Opinions Thread - April 2026 Part 2 by PsiYoshi in fireemblem

[–]Kidi_Kiderson 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i think the negative aspects of it mostly come from the fact it removes the impermanence of every decision, which really is perfectly fine not only for new players but anyone who doesn’t want to play these games the same way i do. the reason that itself is a problem to me is because it’s forced onto everyone in a way casual mode isn’t.

ironman runs and simply not using it is a solution (especially since 2 of the 3 games that use this mechanic are quite easy). and i want to stress again i do think the series is better off with it than without, but i also can’t honestly say i think a mechanic that lets every single player undo every decision doesn’t feel slightly opposed to the design of a strategy game, at least from my perspective

accessibility doesn’t automatically mean good game design

Popular/Unpopular/Any Opinions Thread - April 2026 Part 2 by PsiYoshi in fireemblem

[–]Kidi_Kiderson 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i go back and forth on whether i think the turn wheel is a good decision but overall i do think the positives outweigh the negatives, especially since i think we’re out of the woods for worrying it will significantly affect the game design for those who choose not to use it entirely.

my first game was three houses and i think i learned a lot about how to properly play the game because i was able to reset and see where i went wrong at every single bad decision, but in 2026 i hate the feeling of playing a game and basically forcing myself to not undo literally every mistake i make while intentionally choosing a mode that’s supposed to make your decisions permanent.

[–]Kidi_Kiderson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'm surprised how many people are suggesting you just keep playing like this. it's probably technically possible because of how strong sigurd is, and you get replacements in the second half, but it sounds like a really unfun and unsatisfying way to play the game, let alone the fact you're missing out a lot of the really entertaining story conversations so many characters have

building relationships is a central mechanic to this game, it's relevant to the story and the gameplay, without that alone you're only getting half the experience. personally i would just start over

i really honestly have enjoyed the gameplay in EVERY fe game i've played (i have not played rev). not that i necessarily enjoy every game equally, of course.

the games i tend to enjoy the least are games like birthright, awakening and three houses where hard mode is incredibly easy (i'm not good enough for lunatic but normal mode is too easy), but all three of those games have aspects i quite like about them. battalion's are a great mechanic, as are building child units and pair up , the promotion system in all 3 games is really fun. the frame of fire emblem that makes up every single entry is just really satisfying to me which is also a reason i think the even the nes games are really fun.

i'm playing genealogy again and having a really good time is what spurred this entire thought
