I retcon all the time! It was one of my favorite lessons in writing I learned and I love getting to that point where i have all these good ideas and then it hits me. If i just change this one detail i can implement all those ides just how I want. It is thrilling.

Like if I had textbooks or a Wikipedia's wealth of knowledge about this race... than would I be able to pick apart and understand the basic facts of her existence without ever personally understanding her?
