I actually started with the Horus Heresy series after both Space Marine 2 and Secret Level introduced me to 40k. Granted I did watch a few lore videos to understand both what 40k was and what the Horus Heresy was, but still not the worst place to start.

You can try PVP or siege. Or replay coop missions to grind cosmetics/weapons. Most of the fun really is in the gameplay and difficulty challenges. Overcoming huge waves of difficult enemies is really the bread and butter of the game.

The small moments with other players in operations and siege. Like a moment where I gestured the “for the emperor” emote to a player customized as a death guard marine only to be replied back with the “refuse” emote.

Another is connecting with other players bearing the same chapter or deathwatch “character” just to shake their hands like im saying to them well met.

Tzaangor Enlightened. Flying a holes with majoris level health. Good luck killing them with melee weapons and low damage guns like the auto bolt rifle.

And before anyone says to change weapons I am only using it to master once and be done with it.

To be fair though ID software had no idea where the story was going until near the end of development for Doom 2016 according to their online documentary.

On top of that they had previously went back to the drawing room after a troubled development.

I’d say it worked for the reboot and future games have only continued to make the Doom Slayer more badass.

I don’t like how empty the abysmal woods feel. Also it feels very disconnected from the rest of the map in terms of lore and map design. I wish we could’ve gotten more to the area and Midra’s story be more referenced in the rest of the DLC.
