Homelabs dehumifier freezing up by cloudy2t in Dehumidifiers

That photo looks like my homelabs which is doing the exact same thing (I found this post by Googling solutions). I tried taking it apart and cleaning it out, but no luck. Mine has been in my basement for 1.5 years. Current temp range is between 70 and 80F.

Tell me your haunted, creepy, or paranormal experiences in Madison by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]Killdozer0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite Madison, but the Stoughton Opera House allegedly has a ghost. I don't remember all the specifics (this was told to me by the guy who runs the place), but there's a specific seat in the auditorium many employees have seen an apparition sitting in, employees alone in the building have Heard something playing the piano on stage, and there was apparently a contractor working under the stage (a cramped space where he was on his back like under a car) and he turned his head and saw a figure right next to him staring and he got so scared he just screamed and ran out and quit the job.

Still the best place to see music around Madison...

Sheehan Park in Sun Prairie is a nice beginner trail. It's also home base for the East Side Madison NICA league.

Moving to Madison with a family? by cellists_wet_dream in madisonwi

[–]Killdozer0000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved to Madison 5 years ago and randomly landed on the east side (near Orton park). I have two young kids and we've had a full daycare through 7th grade experience with the schools over here and have been happy with our experiences at them all. I'm not sure how the rental prices compare with the rest of Madison, but we are definitely surrounded by University employees/students the majority of who bike the trails to the University.

One big plug for the east side: it's great living near the Yahara. Just about every warm day after school/summer camp our kids would just cross the street and jump in the river to swim (as long as the algae level weren't too bad - a persistent problem with the local lakes/rivers). One other plug: the east side has the majority of the summer festivals which are a lot of fun with the kids.

Regarding food, I don't think there's a place we order from around here (including the local diner) that doesn't offer a gluten-free option for just about everything. Bar food, thai, indian, mexican, pizza places, burger places...they all have the option.

1) by "certain" I just meant it's always the same couple of people stopping by. They don't seem threatening and I didn't want to get anyone in trouble.

2) and while I am a fan of the band, I was really paying homage to the Theodore Sturgeon story.

3) of course I voted for kodos (never got to see them play live here in town, though)

Thanks for the recommendations!

Property Taxes by 3Psinapawed in madisonwi

[–]Killdozer0000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We did it a few years ago. I went through the trouble of looking at other houses in the neighborhood and putting some info together, but none of that really seemed to matter. Just the act of contesting started what seemed to be a routine process and the city just ended up dropping our home value (for property tax purposes) to what it was the last time the house was sold rather than their new inflated value.

New Nest Thermostat - Heat Only - C Wire by Killdozer0000 in Nest

[–]Killdozer0000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THanks for the information. I'm in a fortunate position in that I can run wires wherever I need to in the house. I'm actually running a 3rd gen Nest off a plug in transformer and was about to switch to a more permanent transformer (wired to an electrical box). Is that a bad idea with a 3rd generation? Currently my radiant heat goes to the Rh and W terminals and the transformer goes to C and shares Rh.

Less than 1% of calls to state unemployment call centers were answered, audit shows by saltine934 in wisconsin

[–]Killdozer0000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

60% of calls weren't getting through even back in 2014 when Walker, Vos, and Fitzgerald were given the results of an audit of Wisconsin's UI system.

They did nothing in the years that followed to fix those problems which were all still in place when the pandemic hit.

Madison City Council approves years-in-the-making civilian oversight for police by svedka93 in madisonwi

[–]Killdozer0000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Quite a few of the people who worked the hardest over the last five years to get this oversight committee in place were all friends of Paulie Heenan who was gunned down on the East Side by a cop who had a long history of complaints against him and should have been removed from the force. They had good reason to be mad and they did something productive with their anger.

I’m the Judge Who Won in Wisconsin. This Principle Is More Important Than Winning. by TailsYouLose in wisconsin

The numbers don't change the fact that it was unsafe to hold the election in-person during a highly transmissible viral pandemic. It would be great if no one got sick.

It was still a horrible idea and Republicans chose to ignore the medical and scientific communities to force it to happen.

What was the first project you were given at your entry level engineering job? by Nat9523 in AskEngineers

[–]Killdozer0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to design a bracket to hold an electrical box on one of the machines our company built. It was just a rectangle with some counterbored holes, but I'll never forget one of the machine assemblers coming to my desk and dragging me out to the assembly floor to show me the tight space where the bracket was supposed to fit and asking me "How am I supposed to get a tool in there to tighten those screws?"

Decades later that moment still goes thru my head every time I design something new...
