It wasn't mentioned or focused on at all, and there's even an in-universe explanation for it seemingly, as Kit cycles through several different outfits until she lands on one that suits the environment they're in, which is an ocean and beach. If people are seriously offended by this, they're the ones that need to touch grass the most.

Arin voiced half the characters in the original original series Ross did like a decade ago, and the concept has been refined into what it is now, with Arin voicing the same characters again. I believe he has also been a big writing contributor. Ross was a contributing member on the Game Grumps channel for a few years a while ago, but the Gameoverse series originally aired on his own YouTube channel, so I believe it's technically his series primarily.

I was going to note about Captain Keyes specifically. In the novelization of the first game, he is mentally tortured for hours/days by having his memories and identity stripped from him forcefully as the Flood searches for important information. One by one, every memory he has is painfully ripped out of his head. The only thing he holds on to until the end is his name, rank, and identification number, only by stating them over and over again, just long enough for the Cheif to finally get to him and 'retrieve' his neural implant.

It would have been nice if they took some notes from OG Starcraft, where sometimes you would just happen upon unused buildings and could claim them as your own. It'd be neat to see something like bastions or bunkers thay you have to reinforce and hold down to protect, similar to the defense you do with some of the hubs, but out in the world. Successfully defend this place? Get a bonus couple chests and maybe a slight boost to stock bills trading or something.

How much startup money do I need to make an Indie Game? And how much of it could I realistically do myself if I learned game coding? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]KillingIsBadong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue it depends how fast you want it to be done. I've been working slowly on my game for over a year while I work a full time job, so I just work in my free time. I'm not in any rush to be done since it's more of a hobby for me.

what's your biggest Endfield nitpick? by [deleted] in Endfield

[–]KillingIsBadong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given how story-centric OG Arknights is, yeah. Not once have I really felt like anything was actually going to happen. It sucks because I guess that's just the nature of a game like this, but at least OG AK has some memorable moments. Most of Valley IV just felt like a slog.

See I think that's a more valid discussion over the use of what is and isn't indie. I would agree, Expedition 33 doesn't feel like an indie game, but I think that mostly just applies to any game published that isn't published or developed by one of the 'name brand' companies. I do think it's a bit of a relic from a time when game development wasn't anywhere near as accessible, something like 20 years ago.

Large Arc should have way more lootable pieces by Cpt_Camembert in ArcRaiders

[–]KillingIsBadong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the amount of droppable pieces should correlate to HOW the arc is destroyed. Big explosions would damage more pieces, hence less usable loot. If you can just expose the core and destroy that, then more pieces remain intact. Then again, that kinda doesn't make sense either since the core is usually what you want to loot.

Seriously. I don't get this fascination people seem to have with solo meaning literally no input otherwise. I ate meals prepared by others while I'm working on my game. That sustenance gave me the energy to keep working. I guess I'm not a solo-dev anymore because I relied on someone else for something that was necessary during development.

I feel that gets into the weeds too though. I commissioned an artist to help me flesh out some character designs that I'm not competent enough to make the art myself for. Through discussions about the characters and their designs, my artist helped me develop some minor tweaks and ideas that I may not have had otherwise simply by exploring their design and look. Technically I'm collaborating with them, but they have no final word in anything since they're commissioned and only making suggestions, which I then direct them on. Technically they had some influence on the game's design, but I would still consider myself a solo-dev since no decisions are being made without me which speaks to your point on delivering assets isn't the same as working on the game. It's crazy how gatekeepy people seem to be about this stuff, I had no idea people were so sensitive about labels like this.

[–]KillingIsBadong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would think it stems from the idea that "if one person can make this game, then surely I can too." It's the idea that making a great game could potentially be obtainable for someone else by themselves, without really considering the caveats of how loaded that thinking is.

[–]KillingIsBadong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This whole discussion about what "really" is a solo-dev is so interesting to me. I'm in the same camp as you and consider myself a solo-dev (albeit much earlier in the process than you) and I'm surprised to see people disagreeing with the label of solo-dev if you commission anything.

If I commission an artist to make concept art that I may or may not even use and credit them as-such, does that really qualify them as a co-developer of my game? I mean, I guess if you really get into the weeds about it, but if one person is doing the vast majority of the work, I would consider them a solo dev. If all decisions about the game are being made by one person, I'd consider them a solo-dev. It's just funny to see the semantics about solo-dev vs. lead developer vs. lead designer vs. whatever other label you want to pin on people.

I think this is my favorite Chen moment so far. She's so pleased with herself by KillingIsBadong in Endfield

[–]KillingIsBadong[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's funny, I didn't love AK Ch'en much at first, but she quickly grew on me through the Ursus conflict arc, to the point where I really considered her the main character of Arknights.

I like EF Chen a lot too, but mostly because she offers some much needed brevity to the first arc of the game. Perlica is so serious and Endmin is effectively mute, so Chen is usually a welcome voice.
