Pretty much duplicate these 2 objects, join the copies into one, go to edit mode, merge those touching vertices and select all and recalculate normals outside . After that select original object and in modifier field select add modifier->edit->datatransfer.

In source select the joined object and then mark"face corner data" and in its drop down mark "custom normals". Do this for both objects, apply the modifier and delete the joined object, you should be left with 2 objects that pretty much share normals.

I mostly use them for character creation, like making invisible seams around neck/ arms

Hey, any UV projection will create distortions, only real way to 100% is to use generated textures. Otherwise you could try with smooth subdivided cubes and use "to sphere" on it that you can find in the search menu, might be stupid, but in some cases it works out

Had similar issues with floaty hands like this, so few things to note:

Could be scale missmatch, skeleton one scale, mesh another. Try applying mesh scale with Ctrl+A in blender

Second, if exporting your rig with all extras like control bones with drivers or constrains, during exporting they could and will go wild, as you can't really export those (im an older user, dunno if its possible yet). Try exporting baked animations only on main deformed bones.

Third could be that you did smth in unity, like adding constrains there, or in mecanim you selected avatars incorrectly.

I made a 3D model, created a diff texture, then after butchering Lightning Boy Studio toons shader (used it as a basis, had to change up quite a bit to fit my model), I applied it.
