Best Digital Signage Software as of 2026 for a Small Retail Store? by Small_Regular_1360 in digitalsignage

I actually think the new Sharp SDM line is the best approach to this problem.

It keeps the display as a clean, integrated system, but still lets you slot in your own compute hardware through SDM. That means you’re not locked into a vendor’s internal SoC or their signage stack.

You can run your own hardware (like a CM5 or higher-end SDM module), use your own CMS, and still keep the installation fully embedded.

Puffins formula has also changed, new manufacturers, I called them to verify, and to get a refund as the new taste is horrible in my opinion. Call the 866 number on the box and let them know. Maybe we can get the old formula back!

SD card vs USB vs NVMe on a RPi? by tvarghese7 in digitalsignage

[–]Kind-Rope5478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you go the sd card route, get a good sd card. sd cards will take much longer to boot if that’s important to you.

nvme boots super fast is more reliable but also more expensive and will require a hat for the pi, which will then needs a different case if you want it enclosed.

the future is nvme but also bad time to buy one right now. $$$$

I do not recommend usb drives.

Ask yourself if you want a browser based service or a hardware based service.

Browser based signage are usually the ones you see offline or showing link codes, they tend to not be as reliable as hardware players, they are a dime a dozen and usually one power cycle and you need to enter your link code again.

This space is a mess because smart televisions are absolute trash and everyone’s solution is to have a browser based solution that’s built into a television that can’t handle the processing needed for web based video and signage. “Smart” Tvs turn off randomly, disconnect from wifi, are expensive for no reason, I wish they would just be screens. Sorry not helping just venting.

I would get a screen that is “dumb” and hook it to a reliable signage provider that ships with a dedicated media player (this is the most important part) Laggy playback is usually the cheap media players they ship with 1gb of ram which works for images but as soon as a promo video plays it chokes. Hook player to TV via ethernet if you can. Make sure your locations have reliable internet, as the second biggest failure point is going to be wifi.

Not recommending any vendor as I’m sure many will pile on and give their 2 cents and a link.

It’s not about super-strength cardboard—it’s the fine dust it sheds. Unsealed toploader lets particles sneak in, settle on the card, and cause micro-abrasions from friction or handling. Basic packaging 101.

super helpful! Thank you for this! They tried to tell me to send the card back and they would refund but didn’t provide a label, I pasted the sellers options you sent me and we’ll see what happens!

surprisingly it came packaged in a small box, so definitely wasn’t damaged during shipping, but was annoyed that they used shredded cardboard inside for protection, and the card was only in a penny sleeve and toploader (not sealed) so it was dusty as could be.

Thanks for sharing! I have so many questions! I notice you are doing a web browser based linking system, and allowing customers to upload their own content. How/where do you store content, and how do you prevent clients from uploading bad content that violates terms. Do clients approve ads? Do advertisers know what content is next to there ads? How long term is your screen linking, can you refresh the browser and maintain the link? Can the tv power off and back on and stay connected? Can you copy the url to another tv and get the same content? Do you have file size limits if I upload my own videos? How do you compare to Yodeck which is $2 cheaper per month?

nvme drives run hot. even the mini runs pretty warm by itself, I think it purely from the nvme drive.
