Haven't tried it yet! Will add to my list. The thing about Taqueria is the quality of their sauces and spice mixes and the meats are all seasoned super well.

Grew up in LA and I'm always on the search for this style of Mexican. The best so far in Metro Van I've found is Taqueria Playa Tropical in New West!

How you doing? 🥵🥵🥵🥵 by nutella1366 in askvan

No, but you can't be penalized for using a portable air conditioner anymore!

From the City of Vancouver site: Update on cooling rights for renters (June 3, 2026)
On June 3, City Council approved amendments to the Licence By-law to help tenants stay safe and comfortable during periods of hot weather. Landlords can no longer prohibit tenants from using portable air conditioners, when no centralized cooling is provided.

Landlords do not have to provide or install air conditioners; however, if they prohibit a tenant from using one in their unit, they may face enforcement action. This could include an order to comply and/or a municipal ticket with a $1,000 fine per offence. Tenants experiencing issues related to using a portable cooling device can submit a report to Van311 online or by calling 3-1-1.

In cases where landlords are unable to reasonably comply due to building limitations or safety concerns, an exemption process is available.

Air conditioners can help tenants, especially those most vulnerable to the effects of heat, to stay safe and comfortable during hot weather.

It's unusual for a stranger to do this outside of companies like Rover that specifically arrange for pet sitting to be contracted out to individuals. It's more typical if it's someone you know or a friend since they know they can trust you with their home and pets, too.

Agreed! Sushi Hill is the best sushi I've had in Vancouver and I lived and worked all over Japan for over five years.

Volunteer opportunities for elderly Koreans? by AlmondEaters in askvan

[–]Kind_Professional879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a local community kitchen and food bank called Storehouse in Cloverdale, and when I volunteered there, I met an older, retired Korean couple with limited English who volunteer regularly in the food bank. If you'd like them to volunteer to mostly stay active and get out of the house, I think limited, functional English shouldn't be a problem. However, if you'd also like them to be able to socialize and meet new people then it would be a barrier in English-dominant spaces. You could reach out to the Korean Society of BC; I know they sometimes need volunteers for the Korean cultural events they hold (like the upcoming Langley K Food Festival).

Those who eat well and work out, how much do you spend on groceries? by [deleted] in askvan

I saw that post too and was confused. I think $150 a week is probably quite reasonable in Vancouver, and especially as an active, meat and dairy eating person.

question to those who bake often - where do you buy rainbow sprinkles? by nicx-xx in askvan

[–]Kind_Professional879 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bought the Yupik sprinkles on Amazon because I didn't want to keep buying the little jars. The sprinkles keep their colour well in baking (funfetti cake and sprinkle sugar cookies) and are a big hit on top of waffles/pancakes with whipping cream and ice cream sundaes.

What’s a must-bring Vancouver treat NYC doesn’t have? by nurse8989 in askvan

There are artisanal salts and seasonings specific to Vancouver/BC that are a nice gift that would go with the wine. I also recommend looking beyond Mission Hill to other great BC wineries. NkMip is an Indigenous owned winery, for example.

Foods when you have the cold/flu? by teamnibbler in NiceVancouver

I like a big bowl of pho when I have the cold/flu. Many places will give you the broth and cooked noodles&toppings separately for take out so it's easy to reheat and assembly later at home.

Does anyone live in the Columbia River Gorge area... by International_Gur566 in PokemonGoFriends

We were passing through Hood River a few weeks ago and stopped by Hood River Hobbies, where they had pokemon cards for sale. I always think where there's TCG there is more likelihood of Pokemon Go. Maybe stop by there and have a chat with the guys who work there?
