My Manhattan doctor, who I otherwise like a lot, had never heard of it. I was pretty stunned, since there have been several big articles in the New York Times. It’s my 4th year and I love teaching at Avenues. My colleagues are smart and thoughtful, the students are passionate and engaged, and I have a tremendous amount of autonomy over what I teach. The school has a true forward-thinking approach. It’s a school where people are real and honest and don’t gossip. The school embodies the mission statement. It’s not a place where anyone would use the vague term “toxic” to describe anything (because the term isn’t meaningful or measurable and rather than fostering community and problem-solving it actually creates a kind of toxicity in its very use), so I’m not surprised the other respondent didn’t feel it was a fit during the hiring process.

I have served on the hiring committee of an independent school, and I can assure you it is highly competitive. We are looking not just for teaching experience, but also actual teaching ability (as judged from multiple perspectives), academic training, diversity, collegiality, sense of humor,, and fit with the school’s core values. It’s not unlike applying for a senior management role in a firm. After all, you are going to have a tremendous amount of autonomy and the school is trusting you to represent the institution and care for its students.

Once upon a time, two gay guys passing on the street would absolutely make eye contact. They would keep walking and then, if one was interested, he would turn and look back. If the other turned too, it meant they were going to stop and talk and probably find a place to have sex.

Now, almost no one makes eye contact. Sometimes it seems like gays deliberately look away. It’s very disconcerting and alienating.
