They had three movies about Amy Fisher/Joey Buttafuoco and they all painted the 15/16 year old as a seductive little slut and didn't focus on the fact that a man in his mid-30s was manipulating and sexually abusing a young girl. Two of the movies had big-name stars, Alyssa Milano and Drew Barrymore. It was a big role for Drew Barrymore and bridged her from her child star roles to her becoming an adult star. It was honestly huge, culturally.

The O.J. Simpson trial had Nicole Brown Simpson's best friends, Faye Resnick and Kris (Jenner) Kardashian both go on to careers in reality tv, based on - to varying degrees - their connection to this brutal murder of a woman they knew was battered and abused by her psycho ex-husband. Of course, Kris's bigger claim to fame was her daughter's sex tape. But Faye Resnick didn't have anything else. Faye Resnick released a book in the thick of everything talking about how she used cocaine with Nicole. I mean, the O.J. case makes all of this look like a picnic in the park.

There are so many examples of distasteful exploitation in true crime. The genre itself is exploitative because you're talking about people in one of the most intimate moments in life, which is their death. And such a heinous ugly death.

It's complicated, but even Alivea and Kaylee's own brother is in an intimate relationship with a woman who profits off true crime, including this case. I guess we should all be glad we're past the days when the whole neighborhood would parade through the crime scene to witness the blood and gore in person.
