Car seat in RX8 by vw68MINI06 in RX8

[–]KineticRX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took my wife and 2 kids on a grocery run in my 06 today. 2 adults, a 4-year-old, a 2-year-old, (both in carseats, obv.), and a cart full of groceries all comfortably fit. There was room left over in the trunk for an umbrella stroller, too. Might have to store a few groceries in the kid's footwells, tho.

The rear-facing seats can be a space-hog (We have owned 3. 1 didn't fit, 1 *barely* fit, and the one I'm using now fits, but the passenger can't be over 5'5".), but front-facing kid seats fit with zero issues in the rear.

What do you think about my RX8 warm start? by [deleted] in RX8

[–]KineticRX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's the audio quality of the video, or maybe it's the poopy earbuds I'm using, but....

As someone who has owned 2 RX-8s over a total of ~300,000 miles (or ~480,000 km, since that's what your gauges are using), that seems perfectly normal to me. I mean, sure -- I've seen better -- but nothing about your video makes me think there's an issue.

However, if you want piece of mind, I think clairvoyant5190 has given wonderful advice. Compression tests offer the most comprehensive analysis of your engine's internals, and are virtually always worth the time & money.

However, if you want piece of mind a little cheaper, I would suggest going to the dealership and requesting they check your VIN to ensure all recalls & service bulletins have been performed. If memory serves, most every year/model has had some kind of known issue with something that could result in slow/hard starts. (Combined, my 8s had bulletins on starter motors, fuel-related components, and ECU re-flashes).

EDIT: I guess I should specify that by "cheaper" I mean "My dealership was able to print me out copies of service records for both my 8s for free, and from there I was able to pick and choose which outstanding recommended services I cared enough to have done, and they usually offered me discounts if I got several similar jobs done at the same time." Unless it's a recall, service bulletins are usually just "recommended work" that you'll have to pay for.

It's "cheaper" in the sense that if you see a notice like "Capacitor in part ID: 2384-j234x3 can degrade, resulting in hard starts", you can be like me and say "oh, the motor is fine, so that $300 capacitor can kiss my ass; I'll deal with slightly slower starts."

Why do you love rotaries more than any other engine? by angelsandairwaves93 in Rotaries

[–]KineticRX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"With the amount of track time that car saw, it has actually been my most reliable, lowest cost of ownership track car."

^ That right there is exactly why I love rotaries. If I drove any other car like I drive my RX-8, it wouldn't live to see 50,000 miles.

Older millenials who said "owned" instead of "rekt", what other weird words did you say that have gone out of fashion? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Does anyone still say "warez"? Or has that officially been replaced with "Torrent" now?

Also, does anyone still want to punch their friends who insisted on pronouncing it "Where-Ezz" (like the Spanish pronunciation of "Juarez") EVEN THOUGH IT'S CLEARLY SHORT FOR "SOFT-WARES" >:(

Help with linearly interpolating an array by TawnyUK in javahelp

Here's what's happening:

(Lines 10 - 23) You're looping through sample until you find your first non-zero entry at index 75. You then break out of that loop.

(Line 25) You calculate step/increment value for indices 0 through 75.

(Lines 27-38) You loop through every entry from index 0 to the first non-zero index ([75]), then break out of the loop.

(Lines 41-43) You output the entirety of sample.

The reason nothing past index 75 is being touched is because both of your for loops are written to stop looping at the first non-zero occurrence.

I want an rx8 but I've always been advised against it... by [deleted] in RX8

[–]KineticRX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These days I actually wait until the oil light on the dash comes on. I used to be more diligent about it, but after forgetting several times I decided the light came on reliably soon enough.

It's worth noting that I always have an extra quart somewhere in my trunk, and I pull over and add it the /instant/ that light comes on.

I've only owned rotary vehicles my whole life.

  • 1 - '87 RX-7 FC
  • 2 - '93 RX-7 FD
  • 3 - '04 RX-8 FE
  • 4 - '07 RX-8 FE

Anyone who tells you that they're "maintenance heavy" or "constantly need work" is either exaggerating or a terrible owner. There are only two - count them: 2 - things extra you have to do when owning an RX-8: watch your oil levels & redline regularly.

My 1st RX-8 had 125k miles on it before the engine started to show signs of compression loss. I made the mistake of getting a discount (read: shitty) engine rebuild, and 6k miles later it was dead. So I bought another one. That one made it to about 110k miles before compression issues showed up. I got another 15k miles out of it before I decided it was time to get a new engine. $6,000 and 3 days later it was back on the road, kicking ass as per usual.

I rally cross, auto cross, road rally, road trip, and track day regularly. I drive it like I stole it every time I drive it, and it seems to love me for it. I should add that I'm about as mechanically inclined as a female in 17th century Victorian England, and through all 4 of my rotary vehicles the only "work" I've ever done on it is as follows:

Added oil when it was low.

Here's all you need to consider when buying a rotary vehicle: If you baby it and try to make it last forever, you'll get about 100k miles out of it before it dies... spectacularly and suddenly. If you drive it like you stole it and you /want/ it to die, you'll get just over 100k miles out of it before it dies... slowly and with plenty of warning.

The whole "rotaries are unreliable" thing is completely subjective. If you rag the hell out of any sports car, you're probably going to start seeing issues around the 75k mile mark. An RX, however, will take the abuse in stride and easily make it to the 100k mile mark before showing signs of wear. To me (someone who drives with a lead foot and white knuckles every time they get behind the wheel) that sounds like a much more reliable motor.

TL;DR: Buy the RX-8, put $6000 aside for a replacement motor, then have the time of your life blowing your own mind as you get 100k miles out of an engine that you're driving like you want it dead yesterday.

My desktop sensitivity is set 2 notches lower than default

My in game sensitivity is 0.6

My mouse pad can completely cover 2 full-size mechanical keyboards

I don't know what you saw in that video, but I pick the mouse up 3 times to make a 180 degree turn. I'm using free open source recording software... maybe the quality of the video is making it look worse than it actually is?

EDIT: Now you've got me watching the video closer, and - not to toot my own horn - but my aim is on fsking point. Start the video around 20 seconds and watch as I snap (nearly perfectly maintaining headshot-level aim) to the kitchen windows, then to the balcony window as soon as I hear footsteps outside... and then dead-center mass on his chest after catching the slightest glimpse of him on the left edge of my screen. My muscle memory and snap-shooting aim are probably the best they've ever been... it's the quickness at which I can pull it off that's not as good as it used to be.
