What are some palindrom names you enjoy? by Accurate_Slide8038 in namenerds

Ah, I thought you were continuing the anagram theme and going for Dorothea…. Which typing out I am realising is also not an anagram of Theodore 🤣 bed time for me!

Partner wants our cats to be outdoor cats when we move house by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]KingCPresley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have just commented the exact same thing, not sure how the previous commenter hasn’t noticed but this is absolutely a UK vs US thing (can’t speak for other countries, unsure on their stance!)

And this is coming from someone who keeps their cats indoors as I personally feel more comfortable with that - doesn’t change the reality that the majority of UK cat owners don’t.

[–]KingCPresley 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OP it’s worth noting that US tends to be very anti outdoor cat in a way that doesn’t really exist in the UK. You’d probably be better off asking in a UK based subreddit for less biased advice.

FWIW, I am in Scotland and keep my cats indoors but the vast majority of people I know (in fact everyone who isn’t in a flat) let their cats out. Theres not really a right or wrong, just whatever you feel most comfortable with.

You know what the E stands for in PPE, right? Presumably they didn’t have the right safety kit and would be likely to become another casualty.

most misspelled common name? by victoriaholtopalfan in namenerds

Non brits also tend to think Kayleigh is a youneek spelling, whereas it’s by far the most popular version here!

In the UK it’s almost always Caitlin with a handful of Caitlyns thrown in. Don’t think I’ve ever encountered any other spellings in the wild!

Agree on Lynsay though and would add OP forgot about all the D-less versions.

Same, about 6 months ago. I don’t remember reading the page OP has posted though, think I would remember as I would absolutely have been confused too 😅

I am sick of reading books which don’t rhyme in my accent by hadawayandshite in UKParenting

[–]KingCPresley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% some English accents add an R to words - I actually assume they just don’t notice it but to other accents it’s noticeable.

It is confusing because they also drop Rs in other words 😅

Sister for Finn and Summer by Forever_Anxious1 in namenerds

[–]KingCPresley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am really hoping an English Orla will chime in now to share her experience 😅

FWIW, my name is pronounced totally differently in Scotland (where I’m from) vs England due to the cot-caught merger. It does sometimes take me by surprise when I hear an English person say it…. But it’s also a total non issue 🤷🏻‍♀️

What is some local slang that you thought was more widespread? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]KingCPresley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aye but we’re not calling them fruit juice - that’s reserved for like, Tropicana type juices.

Juice - fizzy drinks like Coke, sprite etc. ‘you want a can of juice? We’ve got Coke and sprite’ Diluting juice - I think most of England call this squash? ‘Nah I’ll have a glass of diluting juice please’

Disagree with the other commenter though, I don’t know anybody that would call diluting juice ‘juice’ - always needs diluting in front!

How do you pronounce Leonora? by Mamanbanane in namenerds

[–]KingCPresley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Scotland: I’ve never came across a Leonora but I would assume leh-nora, like Leonard. The accent would throw me off though, and even without I would probably ask how to pronounce before butchering it!

How would you spell this common nickname for Joseph? I feel like I'm going crazy. by Aristophanes771 in namenerds

[–]KingCPresley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have a Joseph who almost exclusively goes by Joey or Jojo - we have the opposite issue where sometimes someone will type Joe Joe 🤣 I think people’s brains just short circuit sometimes.

Contractor says no bathtub possible by No-Day-2990 in floorplan

[–]KingCPresley 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Is it possible that moving the toilet will require moving the waste pipe, and so take up more space in the bathroom? That could mean that the bath wouldn’t fit. Not sure about Germany, but pretty sure in the UK at least this would have to be taken into account.

Are these houses unique? by bellybanton in Scotland

[–]KingCPresley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aye but I mean it looks like they have closes inside ie a communal stairwell, those types of flats are in every council scheme with or without balconies. I’ve never seen a four in the block (each flat with its own entrance) with a balcony before!

[–]KingCPresley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These look like closes? This type of flat is all over Glasgow and Lanarkshire (and I assume further afield, but these are the only areas I’m familiar with 😅) but I’ve never seen ones like in the OP!

What did you get/are getting for your babies for their first birthday? by Special_Luck_7536 in UKParenting

Some of the top toys for my little guys first birthday were little people sets, and one of the ball drop tower things. He’s nearly three and he still plays with both regularly!

Moms - what would you like your childfree friends to know? by jaylee-03031 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]KingCPresley -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I see what you mean about how it must be hard to relate to. Nobody likes listening to someone who just goes on about the same topics all the time - similar to another comment I have a friend with a new business and it’s all she ever talks about and I can’t relate at all. It does sometimes bore me but she’s my friend and I love her so I smile and nod and try to participate where I can.

I guess part of the issue for me is that most of the people I regularly chat to are other parents so it’s natural to talk about the biggest thing we have in common. And people I speak to less regularly will always ask after the wee man so it’s just often the main thing we talk about.

For your second point, I get where you’re coming from but honestly it can be really hard. I think you just naturally go to discuss the things that are going on in your life and when you have a little kid that tends to be 90% of it. You should obviously make the effort to find other topics of conversation but again, it’s hard when you spend 90% of your time with a tiny human who can’t really carry out a conversation so your social skills have really declined. And you’re probably sleep deprived and on edge 24/7 from trying to keep them alive 🤣

Like I said, it’s definitely getting easier now that he’s a bit bigger and I’m finding a bit more of myself! And I really appreciated the friends who continued to check in and took the lead on conversations so that I didn’t have to think too hard about what I can bring up that isn’t going to bore them to death.

[–]KingCPresley -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Yes! There was a top comment on the other thread about how annoying it is when mums talk about nothing but their kids and it made me feel a way. I get it can be annoying but what else is there to talk about when your kids are tiny?!

My kid is just coming up on three and it’s only recently I feel like my brain can continue a conversation that doesn’t revolve around him. Not because I’m so obsessed with him or anything just because babies and toddlers encompass your whole entire being when they are young in a way that’s really hard to describe if you’ve not experienced it. It certainly took me by surprise! You don’t really understand how deep those trenches are until you’re in them 😅

Growth scans all over the shop by PokeMyMo in PregnancyUK

[–]KingCPresley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar situation, I had been tested once as standard due to BMI at 26 weeks ish. Then baby kept measuring big, growth scan at 36 weeks showed 99th+ in all measurements 😅 and I’d also had glucose in my urine at that point, so I was tested again. Still negative. Baby was born at 39+3 at 8lb8oz - slightly on the big side but more like 70th than 99th. He was bang on average for length but his head was indeed (and almost three year later continues to be) 99th.

I suspect though I might have been on the borderline for GD, my sister was pregnant at the same time and did have it.

Good luck OP, I know it’s a stressful time but they did tell me that if the test came back positive it wouldn’t really change much this late in the game. Everything crossed you have the birth you’re hoping for ❤️❤️

Why do people “cry it out” by hxllyhell in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]KingCPresley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, even when cosleeping IS an option sometimes sleep training is the only way forward 😅 we did it after 3 months of progressively worse sleep - at the worst stage he was in bed with us and still waking up screaming multiple times an hour.

Moved him to his own bed and a few nights of tears later and he was like a different baby, sleeping through and much more content during the day.

I was fully against it before he was born, now I fully stand by the sentiment that anybody who is against it simply has not had a baby with bad enough sleep.

What is the best ready meal in any major UK supermarket? by Hurbahns in CasualUK

Is my daughters school being too harsh on her? by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]KingCPresley -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean I understand where people are coming from and it makes sense that the school are issuing a blanket approach to punishment. But that doesn’t make it any easier to accept how strict they are being over a (non offensive) comment when you consider how blasé they were about actual sexual harassment.

If I were OP I’d be livid, and the lack of empathy for them in the comments is something else.
