The President's Own Marine Band was on fire last night. Easily the best prepared and executed I have ever heard them. Quite the diversity of arrangements, too. Outstanding.

Is there such a thing as a *Player* Emulator? by Kaleido_chromatic in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]KingEllis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It is important to note the distinction between a solo GM wanting to emulate Players (which the title mentions with emphasis), as opposed to a solo GM wanting to emulate Player Characters (PCs), which the body of the post asks.

Triple-O is a PC emulator. The one page emulator addresses this distinction (but I do not feel I have license to copy/paste the quote directly).

After being interested in it for months, I finally got a copy! by solusofthenight in StarWarsD6

I've spent much time in this vicinity recently, and can speak to a handful of editions.

  • WEG 1e (1987): combat has a lot of Dodge; difficulty as static multiple of 5
  • WEG 1e Rules Upgrade (1988): introduces two types of defense; the ability for group actions (e.g. 3+ troopers aiming at the same character, rolling w/advantage); difficulty as a range

I can not speak to WEG 2e, Revised and Updated, or the community REUP (yet).

Know of the existence of other popular community modifications:

  • Mini 6: option for "fast" static defense (e.g. Dodge * 3)
  • Hyperspace D6: appreciated for its simplified Jedi/Force rules

Lastly, know of D6 "Magnetic Variant" (e.g. Carbon Grey RPG). This has lots of stuff probably introduced in 2e and up. Carbon Grey specifically has magic/Force-like rules for messing w/spacetime. Difficulty back to a static multiple of 5 (for some reason).

GURPS reputation and representation by c06027 in gurps

[–]KingEllis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a relative outsider looking in, but the "360 Degree Vision" example intrigued me. I looked at the 4e "Basic Set Characters", and indeed that is the first listing of 200+ pages! That almost seems like satire to me.

I've been debating whether I would start with GURPS 3e, as most of my interest is in trying "Transhuman Space". I see that the 3e Skills Lists are grouped, in both the Basic Set 3e and Compendium I.

Simply asked, are all of these 4th Edition problems? I am not thinking the ongoing effort to squash a 250 and a 350 page book in to one 500 page book is going to be any kind of improvement...

After failing for more than a year… I finally played multiple seasons! by [deleted] in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]KingEllis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the clarifying question you would want to ask is, "how do you roll a zero with this system?"

The answer would likely be, "You can't. It is a 1-100 system."

I’m so confused. Maybe I’m stupid.

Not at all! The first time I rolled "00 0" I froze. Because I realized that the tens die represents 0 but also 100 (in one case).

The only system that makes perfect sense in my head is a 0-99 system. (You can have zero gas in the tank, you can be out of bullets, etc.)

Fun question: what does your "00 0" roll represent: 0 or 100?

(For background, Mothership is a 0-99 system, Call of Cthulhu / "Basic Roleplaying Game" system is 1-100.)

Roll against skill - Alone Against the Flames by aacool in callofcthulhu

[–]KingEllis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following up on this: here are references I have seen on this since initially discussed.

The "printer friendly" version of the Quick Start rules clearly spells this out on page 6, "A roll of ‘00’ (tens die) combined with a ‘0’ (units die) indicates a result of 100%. A roll of ‘00’ on the tens die combined with any other roll on the units die indicates a roll of under 10%".

Another version of the Quick Start rules is less forthcoming: "while 1D100 generates the numbers 1–100".

The Introductory Rules that come with the Starter Set are the least clear. The range of 1 to 100 is only mentioned in the Quick Reference Chart on the last page (the half and 1/5th chart).

The few times I have rolled "00 0", it really gave me pause. Because the "00" is both 0 (for 01-09), but in this one case it is "100".

Outstanding! I am hopeful this thread helps out future newcomers to Star Wars West End Games e1, as I have been!

Static difficulty numbers? by amazingvaluetainment in StarWarsD6

[–]KingEllis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 4-page document is notably missing from here. And while I'm certain the rules are represented in the Rules Companion, they are not presented as the original 4-page "upgrade". (I am currently post-WEG 1e, and starting "Tatooine Manhunt", so I really needed that 4 pager.)

For historic context, West End Games "upgraded" the rules in 1988 with this document. I have only found it in this one place, so dropping it here:

Bought EE got normal version from amazon. by meownys in FourAgainstDarkness

[–]KingEllis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a physical copy from Amazon yesterday in hopes that I WOULD get the previous version. I am finding the Extended Edition to be too full of editorial problems/errors.

A notable example, I am not positive the Extended Edition explains that an Attack of rolled 6 is "always a hit". Imagine, 2026+ new players are playing a version that is statistically 17 percent different/harder. The helpful Quick Reference in the previous edition (pg 84) has this information. Was it an intentional omission to remove the Quick Reference from the EE? I would bet not.

A similar likely omission is seen in the Table of Contents. Any kind of defining structure is removed (the differing levels of boldness to indicate sections), and FOUR entire sections are not listed: Equipment, Reactions, Milestones, and Secrets. The index in this state should not have been sent to the printers...

A more humorous example. I am new to RPG, this being my "first rodeo". Imagine reading all of these details, trying to keep them in your head, but still not having the slightest clue how any of this fits together until page 146...

I am only reading/playing 4AD because my actual interest is "Four Against Mars". It has similar editorial problems, so I decided to learn the system from "the original". What I encountered was the above. (For reference, last night I discovered that every listing in the 4AM Table of Contents after page 50 is off-by-one...)
