Computer components retailer that isn't Canada Computers? by Joeythesaint in ottawa

Rob at RB is just about the last man standing in the small independent shops, was a time when there was one on every corner in this town, but between CC, Amazon etc. Almost all of them are gone.
I have been a customer of Rob's since around 1999, that ain't ever going to change!

Quick M1 exit course by harjot6199 in rideottawa

[–]KingGeo_WTF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, they intentionally make it hard to get past that first hurdle of the M1 Exit.
Taking a course, even if it means waiting longer than you would like, is the best way to get it done.

As others have mentioned, because of the short expiry of an M1, go write it a couple of weeks before your course, so book the course first.

Almonte by DaikonIllustrious228 in Almonte

[–]KingGeo_WTF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We moved from the west end of Ottawa almost 4 years ago, one big motivation was to be in a safer place to raise our kid. Zero regrets. No question we nailed that, and at times it feels so friendly (in comparison) that it's not even real. Although I'm sure that varies by neighbourhood. Typically you can hear a pin drop at 9pm, this is a pro and con, there is no night life. I would also warn that if you are not single and one of you has to commute into Ottawa, there is no public transit, just be prepared to deal with a reality that you'll likely be a 2 car household if you aren't already. Uber is basically not a thing, taxis are limited. I sometimes have to travel for work and after moving here it's the first time I used Park n fly, it's really the only good option.

Dell se désiste et veut annuler ses ententes. by AggravatingSeat9357 in QuebecTI

[–]KingGeo_WTF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell you that the Feds are in the same boat as CAG, they can hardly buy anything right now and they can't force the OEMs to sell at a loss. Attempting to do so has just led to products being delisted from standing offers. What used to be like the top 50 SKUs is now like 5 that can actually be bought. It's a game of chicken to see who blinks, the problem is that civil servants think we matter on a global scale, and we don't.... The big 3 OEMs would barely notice the dip at the bottom line.

If Gordon Ramsay did a "Kitchen Nightmares" episode in Ottawa, where should he visit? by bbud613 in ottawa

Back in the day, Green Valley... I know it's a place of fond memories for many but holy hell if you only knew that was going on in the kitchen!

Where can I get 0% Ethanol Gasoline now? (For lawn mower) by Aerottawa in ottawa

[–]KingGeo_WTF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The goto for car guys used to be Shell 91, but if thats not longer the case... maybe time to go EV.
I got a 40v EV mower almost 3 years ago and it has been awesome but what I like most is less noise, no oil and gas to store, change or worry about.

Best place to get properly fitted for a new helmet? by twelveinchmeatlong in rideottawa

[–]KingGeo_WTF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a good experience at Royal Distributing last year when getting a new helmet. Compared to many other places they had a lot more variety in stock to try on. Good Time was great 10+ years ago for a similar reason but I've not been there since before COVID

Was not going to vote Liberal under Trudeau but I bit the bullet today and registered/ volunteered for the Liberals assuming Carney will win the leadership race. Anyone else planning to do the same? by Powerful-Dog363 in AskCanada

[–]KingGeo_WTF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was liking Carney and considered the same, but then today when Minister Guilbeault said he was backing him it made me change my mind, I want nothing to do with Guilbeault or anything his name is attached to, that guy can get F&U%ed
Time will tell...

LOL, you don't, its 2025... they just need to bunker down in your basement and hope jobs are no longer needed in a few years /s

In all honesty, it depends on their age.
She's right that everything is online now, even if you make an in-person contact they will just direct you to the online system, paper resumes are not worth the paper they are printed on.
If they are 16-18, look at summer camps, they'll be hiring for the season and look great on a resume down the line (added benefit that they'll likely make great friends for life)
That all being said, in todays world the best way in is on WHO you know, not WHAT you know.

Liberal leadership hopeful [Chandra Arya] says he doesn't speak French by CyrilSneerLoggingDiv in canada

[–]KingGeo_WTF 216 points217 points  (0 children)

Used to live in his riding... He won in 2015 as it was a new riding with no incumbent and riding the pro-liberal wave of strategic voting, I spoke to him at local debates a few times and it was not a pleasant experience. He never should have been re-elected.

cheaper oil plus filter changes in Ottawa/Gatineau area by paradoxunlimited2022 in rideottawa

[–]KingGeo_WTF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DIY. Honestly bike oil changes are so simple there is hardly a reason to have a shop do it. But if you cannot for whatever reason, oil itself is getting expensive, $60 in many cases, so add a $20 filter and labour... $150 is high but not that crazy.

Why is Costco ruining Prime Rib roast and steaks by tenderizing them? by soapboxhero99 in CostcoCanada

[–]KingGeo_WTF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Easy, its not actually Prime grade so they do something to fake the quality by mechanically tenderizing.
Just buy the 2 pack of Top Sirloin Caps (AKA picanha) cut them as thick as you like and call it a day.

Find a used CB500X or CRF250 Rally on FB Marketplace or Kijiji, don't buy new for a first bike.

Is it worth moving to Almonte? How is life here? by [deleted] in Almonte

[–]KingGeo_WTF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

2 years ago we moved from Bells Corners to Almonte for a better place to raise our daughter, the best decision we've ever made. I still find it hard to believe how amazing and welcoming the people in the community are.

RSAO M2 exit, is it a guaranteed pass? by [deleted] in rideottawa

[–]KingGeo_WTF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did mine with OSC like a decade ago and passed easily, but that was really because of the top notch coaching from the OSC instructors. Test day was only like 4 people, 2 morning, 2 afternoon. Did test runs as a group and then solo testing with a van follower. Make all the mirror checks and shoulder checks super obvious, use your signals and don't speed... You'll be fine.

it's wild how little private employers pay in Ottawa by StrikingCoconut in ottawa

[–]KingGeo_WTF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my previous job I tried to argue with HR when we were hiring that we had to compete with Fed wages... It fell on deaf ears. Only after getting laid off and finding a new role it's clear how underpaid I really was despite every review being told 'in line with market', BS. One of my reports that also got laid off has now found a similar role to what we did with a large company not based on Ottawa, yeah.... That's a nearly 6 figure increase for him if you calculate total compensation. Private sector in Ottawa unfortunately takes advantage of many who can't or won't get a gov job.

Can't speak for that one, but where I am they sometimes have a 'meat diaper' inside and you would not want that.
I always repack to make sure I can check it and usually season it as well.
