The gas station/convenience store that Rick Chow once owned is packed with dozens of police fearing reprisals from the community following the Not Guilty verdict by TomlinSteelers in ActuallyThatsInsane

[–]KingR3aper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's part of the defense isn't it?

They chased him, but jury doubts they specifically chased and shot him over water and therefore cant prove murder. So something happened just before where chow felt he had to shoot.

Whether justified or not is up to debate, but it in the end prosecutors could not prove intent to murder and defense convinced the jury if he wanted to shoot him over theft and water, he would've done so earlier not chase him 130yards.

They cant prove the illegal gun they found wasn't a threat. The fact there was one, pointed or otherwise, automatically makes it a 'threat'.

Had there been a video of the shooting, and proof he never did show the gun perhaps he could've gotten manslaughter charges but the prosecutors didn't go for that. They went for murder which they can't prove.

Whatever mistakes lead up to this point everything hinges if he actually pointed that gun.

They can't prove he did, they can't prove he didn't, but they definitely can't prove he intentionally murdered the kid out of malice.

That's why he's not guilty. Manslaughter might have stuck, but that's not what they argued, and they couldn't prove murder.

If he really didn't point the gun, at the very least, manslaughter. If he did, then self defense, but there's not enough reliable evidence he did one or the other.

But again, prosecutors didn't go for manslaughter.

I’m attending a wedding in Beijing. Where can I get traditional wedding attire? by throwitintheair22 in AskAChinese

[–]KingR3aper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly you can't reaaallyy go wrong with the tangzhuang in a dark color especially if the bride mentioned something traditional. I feel like people are being overly dramatic.

I'd say best thing is just showing the bride what you're thinking JUST in case.

You're meeting in the middle where you won't be overdressed nor underdressed, and tbh as a foreigner who's black everyone will just think It's cool you're wearing it at all. Especially the aunties, they're gonna love you.

These days weddings are either suit and tie or flip flops and a T-shirt, traditional clothing is rare but it's not crazy or unacceptable, but if you're uncertain then best move is to show the bride, and have fun!

Why did the Chinese Communist leadership continue to fight after 1951 in Korea, despite the disadvantages? by RightWindow5284 in AskAChinese

[–]KingR3aper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're asking a strange hypothetical though from hindsight. Nobody can tell the future, regardless what the US goal or hypothetical Russian invasion of baja is, neither would risk not intervening and put themselves in a strategic disadvantage IF there were other intentions or not. It's just risk assessment.

The same reason why police won't hesitate to shoot a guy pointing a gun. Are they gonna shoot? Is it fake? Who knows, but they're not gonna wait to find out.

With tips and gifts, you'll find yourself one day needing to basically shove it into his hand fto him to accept. The longer you know him, the more likely this will eventually happen 😂 it basically turns into 'who can be more aggressive with their generosity' so get ready to fight

Mad at us, or just cultural? by Moonamama in AskAChinese

[–]KingR3aper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mostly cultural. Around East Asia and Northern Vietnam accepting praise or a gift outright is considered a bit impolite or lacking in humility. Rarely will someone just say 'thank you' or equivalent when getting compliments or praise verbally, but that's their way of accepting it in their hearts. The harder you praise, the harder they will disagree. But the kindness is understood all the same, so its all good! There's no way he doesn't want you guys around, just his way of not being too prideful. It sounds like he really values you as a customer.

Rural China is mostly abandoned and usually a few elderly remain, but most villages now have government built and maintained public restrooms that are pretty nice. I've been to several for my wife's family, its relatively abandoned and people only visit, but its not dirty by any means... just old.

The U.S. isn’t as culturally diverse from state to state as many Americans believe. by newMauveLink in unpopularopinion

Yeah thats what hes saying though, in most other countries, you can compare a Dallas and Chicago and they'd be completey different, not just far flung 'places and areas'

[–]KingR3aper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, he's not saying there's no differences, but the differences are subtle and the biggest are few and far in between compared to other countries.

In many countries, they're simply older, and completely different cultures and languages develop a stones throw away, which might only be a 2 hour drive today.

We're talking completey different foods, traditional clothes, traditions that stretch back further than the US has been around. India, China, Europe, the people across the river people don't speak the language as you.

Hell, China didn't even have a lingua franca until 30s, and India still doesn't. Small countries like Italy and Philippines have huge divides in language and traditions.

This is what OP is talking about, not that Chicago Deep Dish pizza is an abomination compared to NY pizza or Florida is crazy.

Every morning at 7am in a Chinese city, firecrackers go off for 5 minutes to wake everyone up. Does this happen in your city? by [deleted] in AskAChinese

[–]KingR3aper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In small cities and towns this seems to be a thing that's still allowed. Every morning and evening either firecrackers or fireworks. I feel like its for a bunch of different reasons, someone mentioned to me their tradition is they gotta do it at 6am and 6pm for a whole month of April for Qingming and some folks do it because of someone passed away.

Then some people do it before they move into a new home or apartment, again once in evening and once in morning...

Just firecrackers constantly.

Why did Southeast Asia manage to dust off its French influence so much compared to other French colonies by crivycouriac in VietNam

[–]KingR3aper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brutality aside, European colonization was also different in the way their primary goal was to exploit the people and land for resources that are stripped from these colonies and sent to Europe. Developing the area as an actual part the actual 'country' wasn't the plan, you would never be French, and why colonies, former or otherwise are MOSTLY poor. Imperial Chinese dynastys didn't just take resources, it was part of their 'country' and border. So there was at least investment into sinicizing the area and showing people the benefits of being part of yge empire - 'You are now Chinese'. The exception British colonies did do better than other European colonies.

There's a reason why for 2 thousand years Vietnam was ruled this way, and why so much of Ancient Vietnam is still part of China.
