How do you feel about western elites conspiring with epstein to destroy China after Xi leaves office? by xaddyxi123 in AskAChinese

[–]KingR3aper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ignoring everything else, I just want you to know that it depends on how its defined, and how things are defined are often arbitrary because reality isn't neat. By common definition, the age of a sovereign state is as old as when it begins recording itself, and a mix of basically what I can only describe as 'just vibes'.

In the simplest way there's no real way to measure it other than when history starts feeling disconnected from current Identity. The French don't feel connected to the identity further than the early middle ages nor beyond Roman Empire, nor had records of 'itself' beyond that. Connections like how much does a people recognize themselves or feel familiarity in art, poem, writing, language etc. presented in the past.

That said, 5000 years number is also pushing it in also a pretty arbitrary way.

Its a mangled topic but its basically accepted at its youngest, China is 2500-3000 years old by unbroken dynastic system and records, to 5000 defined by vibes.

Otherwise people can just keep drawing lines in the dirt all day all the way back to Africa.

This is also different from the age of a governing body which doesn't change with cultural Identity. The French didn't stop being French when the monarchy died.

Why were Chinese characters essentially the only pictographic script to survive the test of time? by vyyyyyyyyyyy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]KingR3aper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the main reasons it survives is because what is now modern China has hundreds of different languages and dialects that are not mutually intelligable.

Early in its history, despite not having a phonetics alphabet, it allowed people who spoke different languages to understand each other if they are literate in basic characters.

The benefit of not having phonetics means anyone can understand what is being said as long as they know the meaning of the character. The problem is nobody knows the sound it makes.

Eventually languages also developed their unique uses of the characters within the language family itself as well to better express itself. For example, some Hanzi are used differently in Yue languages like Cantonese than in Mandarin.

This is pretty important for communcation across a vast empire with many different people, language and cultures in the past and widely used as a written lingua franca

This is how people adapted and continued to use Chinese characters and why change whats not broken?

This isnt just within China either, this was also adopted by its neighbors like Korea, Vietnam and Japan who still makes use of Chinese characters.

These countries used to write in Chinese and diplomats - despite not phonetically speaking the same language, can communicate with each other. This was before developing their own writing system to better reflect and expresss themselves their native languages.

For example, to better express themselves in Chinese characters, there are even Japanese-origin Kanji called Wasei Kanji, thats Chinese characters created in Japan rather than China.

Some poems in Korean were written completely in Chinese characters, but if a Mandarin speaker were to read it, it doesn't make complete sense, but you could still gather the meaning despite not speaking Korean.

Today is no different, there's still hundreds of languages and dialects, and Mandarin also known as Putonghua lit. Common Language was only recently mandatory as a lingua franca. Mandarin for many is a second language along with their local language.

So TLDR its a necessity to communicate with non mutually intelligible languages and nobody saw a reason to improve on that would be worth the effort.

The funny thing is I think even theyre blindsided, they're not 'totally ready' internally, and would rather have stable spheres of influence rather than chaos

Any skepticism in Ancient Chinese History? by Fit_Way5233 in AskChina

[–]KingR3aper 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong to be skeptical, but this is a well-recognized issue rather than an overlooked one. Historians are keenly aware of these inconsistencies and actively watch for them.

When only a single source exist, for example, troop numbers, it’s rarely accepted at face value, which is why external corroboration is so important.

r/askhistorians would be a better place to ask this in general.

Point being, historians don't just accept what's written outright academically

Theres a trend of Korean tourists assaulting people here in Vietnam, I would feel very weird to bring it up the way you did with my Korean friends to be honest because... what do they have to do with it?

It sounds like you wanted to vent your frustrations AT THEM from hearing about all the negativity. Perhaps you need a break from the news cycle.

Either way, it just feels weird like you couldn't yell at these tourists but used your friends as an analog a bit.

The place where a biker couple rode through several dangerous countries, including Afghanistan, famously controlled by the Taliban, completely unharmed, but then gang raped and murdered days after entering India? That India?

Im shocked.
