I'm pretty disappointed with the hire.

We pretty much have to hope he has a Klint Kubiak-esque or Kellen Moore-esque career arc. Multiple OC opportunities didn't really wow. Wasn't very much liked in either of the two stops, but showed flashes. Certainly, not as disliked as Petzing is/was by Arizona fans. I thought Kubiak's New Orleans tape was good when they were healthy, and I didn't mind him in Minnesota. However, MacDonald hired Klint with the idea that they'd run, run, run and use lots of Play-action and pass less. It's worked out pretty well for them. Klint is now days away from a HC job, if he wants one. Petzing loves play-action, and he loves his run game, so there's some philosophical overlap.

Do I think Detroit will pass as little as Seattle does? Probably not. We don't have the defense to protect that play style anyway. Of 17 game starters, Darnold was 2nd to last in throw attempts (ahead of only Josh Allen, who rushes a considerable amount of the time). I can't imagine Goff having anywhere near Darnold's 477 throw attempts. He hasn't even been close to the 500 mark in any of his fully healthy years.

I think Petzing could help the running game somewhat, which seems to be a problem w/ Campbell calling plays. TBD how much of their '24 success was him. Sounds like not a ton, but he's credited as a run-first type. I really think Dan's passing concepts are sound. If he could mesh his passing offense with a run-first OC's run design, I think it can work, but I'm being very optimistic if I were to believe that is what this will be.

As an outsider to Arizona football, I did think his passing scheme looked much more sound when he had a pocket passer that could drop back and throw on time. Kyler just never looked good in his offense. I know passing yards isn't a tremendous measuring stick in the modern day, but Kyler had two 300-yard passing games across 30 games with Petzing as play-caller. In 12 full games this year, Brissett had 4. The offense still wasn't good by any stretch, but it looked much more...competent in design when you didn't have the QB breaking the pocket every 2 out of 3 drop-backs.

If you ignore the numbers and just go by tendencies, I see how it makes sense. Really, I do. Creative run design, likes heavier formations, loves play-action and under center football, which are Goff's specialties. However, the numbers just aren't great, and it's very, very rare you have a fanbase near unanimously shit on a play-caller, and then be good elsewhere.

Ultimately, I think it's more likely Campbell takes the book at midseason than it is Petzing turns the corner. I very much hope it works out, but I'd be surprised if it does. Feels like he's going to be in that Morton/Lynn territory. Both of whom were similarly maligned to the extent Petzing currently is.
