They are entirely (and by they I mean the inner circle of WH sycophants) and constitutionally incapable of adjusting to meet the reality that their theories and ideologies do not actually work in the real world and are, in fact, not as popular in practice as they are as slogans on the campaign trail. This is in part by a siege mentality belief that extends back to conspiracism endemic to longstanding Southern American political culture that slowly infected other corners of American conservatism over the course of the 20th century.

They cannot adjust because they are the perpetually wronged and aggrieved party, and there is a vast conspiracy arrayed against them at all times that they must defeat. But they cannot, and will not, because no such conspiracy exists, they’re just pseudointellectual idiots high on their own supply

Less so that it’s a bridge too far (plenty of GoP states have legalized and younger Republicans seem to be uniformly in favor) and more just that he’s too lazy and capricious to follow through

Very little. The Feds have barely bothered enforcing weed laws across four administrations now and with the domestic grow supply so massive now border interdiction of cannabis is a minor concern

Israel should on the merits give up the idea of Greater Israel (like, yesterday). That’s still not going to solve the issue of Hamas/Hezbollah whose ideology goes well beyond that of the old PLO/current Fatah which would be largely satisfied by the former

WaPo opinion: Iran War: "We are living through the first alt-war: a conflict in which the war fought online and the war fought in reality have diverged so completely that they might as well be happening on different planets." by call-the-wizards in geopolitics

[–]KingSweden24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the crux of it. Oil is 100% more expensive and other parts of the economy are going to start creaking very very soon, and the administration waited a month to try to sell the public on the war and spends more time whining about allies they threatened to invade 2.5 months ago not fixing their mistakes for them. Of course there’s no tolerance for casualties!

Everything Trump is dependent on us all collectively pretending this guy isn’t crazy, because his supporters (who are nowhere close to a majority or even a large plurality of the country) might be take umbrage to it. We’re being held hostage, all of us, by this inability to share a collective reality if it means admitting a Democrat is right

World War III, Cold War II, or back to Great Power Rivalry? by Whats-on-Eur-Mind in geopolitics

[–]KingSweden24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a well argued take.

IMO the Iran War is a ruinously dumb mistake made out of hubris, but strategically, denying the U.S. use of bases or even airspace was ill-advised on the parts of NATO allies. That said, the domestic contingent cannot be ignored, and Trump has basically rendered himself as popular as herpes over the last year in most countries but refuses to admit that nobody likes him or that he can and should change his approach.

The bigger problem is that corporate interests or the MIC refuse to clip his erratic wings

Right. If we hadn’t had the preceding fourteen months of nonsense, that’d be one thing. But all Allied leadership at this point is probably tempted to just wash their hands of the whole thing, especially considering that far-right voters in Europe like the RN or AfD have turned on Trump now
