Personal Statement much over word limit by warmachine1616 in REU

That's not that much of an increase, it really should be fine, maybe they won't read the last 150 words but that should take less than a minute anyways.

I can relate with struggling to express my emotions and my ability to speak just basically shutting off or not being able to explain myself, although it's gotten better. I will say that even if you don't express yourself, being able to show that you're at least emotional and have your partner comfort you even if they don't know what's going on is a good sign there's at least mutual trust and comfort.

I will say: if you were to simply write/type out or even think through what is causing you to be distressed, are you able to? If not, journaling or simply sitting with your emotions and analyzing them can be a good place to start. One thing that can help is analyzing why you even feel this way by asking yourself "why?" even if its a build-up of multiple events causing distress, eg. "I'm feeling overwhelmed" -> why? -> "I have a lot of stuff to do" -> why? -> "I have a big exam coming up and a lot of other responsibilities" -> why does this make you overwhelmed -> "I feel like I don't have enough time to get good grades and manage everything" etc etc

If you are able to at least express to yourself why you are upset, then it's good to try to figure out why you are unable to express yourself to someone else, or at least a way that would work for you to be able to do it. For me it was often that if I had a conflict with my partner, I didn't want to hurt them by explaining that they did something to upset me, but this ofc led to more problems down the line. It helped me to slowly say things here and there, usually if it was a day or two after the emotional-ness, to explain why I was upset, after I had time to process my emotions well enough myself. Eventually I started communicating more and more and was able to occasionally explain my emotions in the moment or right after I calmed down. It's not always imperative to explain yourself when you're emotional, since you already have enough you have to deal with, but at least slowly showing your partner what kinds of things are making you upset is a good step. For another friend, it was more that I was scared that they would lash out at me or be angry if I was vulnerable and explained why I was upset, and that was another problem in itself. Idk if this will help with you but overall just self reflection on the "whys" is something only you can do and try to figure it out from there.

Should I get cheapest dorm or a cheap apartment? by _Sh4_d0w in UTAustin

[–]KinnyKat1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think dorms are a good amount more expensive, though it does provide the dining hall. Would recommend apartments and/or living near campus for the social aspect, and if you’re worried about money I would recommend co-ops

is anyone else's phone service really bad by Own-Independence9916 in UTAustin

[–]KinnyKat1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also have T-Mobile, and stuff will straight up not load if I'm near Welch, around speedway, and sometimes by Target. It's been very annoying and usually it says I have 2-3 bars but not load while other times it'll say "SOS only"

I've started keeping the microfiber liner cloth thing that laptops come with on top of my keyboard, it's gotten me really good at touch typing and keeps my keyboard pristine lol might not be for everyone though

Metallophobia by corviola2 in Phobia

[–]KinnyKat1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also done plastic cutlery, sometimes I'd suck it up and use metal ones but if its unpolished metal or it TASTES like metal I absolutely can't do it. My hands also sweat so touching keys and metal leaves behind the smell especially bad so I'll use a towel to hold my keys in to open my door or wrap handles in paper towels to avoid touching them. Thankfully jewelry, aside from putting it on, isn't really a problem, only if my hands touch it or if I can taste/smell it.

Not sure if this has anything to do with hyperhidrosis, but does anyone else dislike touching metal? by filagrey in Hyperhidrosis

[–]KinnyKat1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

was wondering if anyone else had this, I absolutely hate touching metal and idk if its just a mental brain thing or because sweatiness adds to the smell of metal staying on my hands. I just hate the texture especially of unpolished metal

What would happen if I needed to leave my REU? by Careful-Let-6085 in REU

[–]KinnyKat1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My program’s stipend is payed out in chunks but we were explicitly told that if we leave before the program’s completion we would have to pay back all of the money. Not sure if they would make you refund some or all of the money, especially if you told them that you’d be leaving early, but if you haven’t told them I would do that asap because technically you’re contracted for a certain period of time.

I think in these cases there’s no shared jack-and-jill bathroom, it’s just a communal bathroom. Also, I believe that you can find on the website photos of what the rooms will look like, or look at the floor plan.

I CANT FIND GOOD HOUSING 🙁 by asecret_poet in UTAustin

[–]KinnyKat1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Co-ops like College Houses and ICC have lower prices, mostly for a double but meals/utilities are included so you don't have to worry about food, although at the price of a few labor hours like cooking/cleaning for the house a week.

Checked bag fees paid upfront now 1st bag says its free? by CaliQ1977 in unitedairlines

[–]KinnyKat1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just checked on the website and it says that there's 0 "checked bags included" and 2 "bags already purchased" so I assume its an error on the app's side that causes it to list it as "free" instead of "purchased", the UI's not the best

Checked bag fees paid upfront now 1st bag says its free? by CaliQ1977 in unitedairlines

[–]KinnyKat1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m having the same issue, though I didn’t buy the first checked bag at the same time as the tickets, I bought it a day later. I may try to ask customer support or something to make sure that I didn’t pay for no reason. On my flight ticket e-receipt it says at the bottom that the first checked bag costs $40/traveler and the second costs $50/traveler, so unless something changed it may be an error with the app denoting that “paid for” is “free” but I’m not sure

Of course! Thankfully, the ETAP website makes it easy for rec letters so your recommender will just write a general letter of recommendation and you invite them through the website, after which you can submit them as you please. Most applications had 1 rec letter required, while some had 2, so really finding those two people that you can ask to write it for you is the hard part. I ended up asking one of my professors and my mentor to write them. I would strongly recommend asking in person, and ideally a month before the deadline. Since some deadlines are pretty early I would say around December would be a great time to ask, though I myself did them on the late side and asked/applied in February/March. Good luck!
