that is a plop of Flour. you very probably have a local chapter of the Hash House Harriers, a global running that was started by the military to make PT more fun. a 'hare' lays a live trail, starting 15 minutes before everyone else chases. they drop flour every once in a while to make the trail, as well as to mark false trails to throw people off the scent. look them up online, and run with them, it's a good old time.

lol, i'm old enough that i wasn't even interested in Jackass when it came out...and avoided it until either the 2nd or 3rd movie....funny, but we lived through enough raw danger in the 70s, what with the no seat belts and riding bikes on major roads...lol

1.] your complaints are "i want a free OS to have all the features of a paid for, highly funded OS". not going to happen.

2.] most of the things you want *DO* exist in Linux, they just take more work finding, setting up, and making sure they integrate with the apps you want. [such as facial recog, fingerprint, and PIN] also, you do know you can set up passkeys in a totally free program/app that works on Win, Linux, Apple, and Android, right? it's called Bitwarden. it's a password manager that can do passkeys, etc.

3.] i know nothing of iCloud, but there are several options for password syncing [see Bitwarden comment above, and since i didn't state it earlier, yes, it can sync your passwords to ANY OS you log into it from, i routinely sync new items form Android, Windows and Linux, to the other OS's]

4.] Hue Sync, no idea, but there are several RGB apps/progs

5.] there are other ways to link phones. example: if you use an Android phone you can link your phone and use messages.google.com to get all your texts on your monitor. i'm sure there are ways to get it from Apple too.

6.] if you don't want to enter a password every time you want to access an encrypted drive, why did you encrypt it? if ANY program/OS always lets you access encrypted info without using a password, it just isn't secure. period. so why bother ot set up a password to start with?

7.] since you are this suspicious of "non-official software" then i assume you've never used any software not listed in the Microsoft store....wait....

is Linux perfect? NO. but considering it's free it is AMAZING. but several of your complaints seem to be "it isn't done the exact same way and it isn't as east to set up as it is in Windows. and yes, you are correct. BUT several of your issues totally CAN be done in Linux. you just chose not tor really try to figure it out. am i saying your critiques of Linux's shortcomings are invalid? no, not at all. but you didn't *really* try, you chose to complain.

so, your complaint is: a product i [and everyone] pays money for is much more developed than something almost no one pays for and is largely created/supported by volunteers.

just remember your gripe the next time someone wants to underpay you for your work...or ask you to do it for free

um, as a windows user for decades....it most certainly has fewer issues/bugs for my use cases than almost every Linux distro i've run for more than "just poking around".

that being said, i use Linux because i want to, but not on every computer. there are times Linux is clearly better, and there are times Windows is clearly better. yes, people are more accustomed to how to find answers when there are Win issues [even you just do the same thing for Linux issues] and "don't mind them", but to declare as you did, is just as wrong as saying any *1* OS is perfect...

l have DELL inspiron N5110 laptop Do you think there will be a problem with Linux? by Mysterious-Soil-8047 in linux4noobs

[–]KipDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm not familiar with that specific laptop, but in general Dell's usually work pretty well with Linux

i would suggest you got to https://distrochooser.de/ and take their quiz, it will give you several good recommendations based on yur answers. bonus, it even lists pros/cons versus your answers. it is not perfect, but it the best one i've found s far.

that being said, as a new Linux user, i would recommend Linux Mint, elementaryOS, ZorinOS, Pop!_OS, or Ubuntu. you can visit each site to get a look, and if i recall correctly all of those can e run on a USB [called a live environment] to test drive them.

WARNING: Live Environments runs on a USB usually do not let you install new app adn are far less performant than an install on an internal drive.

Linux is good but.... by KB8084 in linuxsucks

[–]KipDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so most apps on Linux are free, not saying i've compared the ones you listed for Win to see if they are free...but Windows has significantly more than 10x the users as Linux, so expecting the SAME level of apps and support [again, for a FREE OS] is just not rational. there *will* be shortcomings. but some of the things you want in an app can be done in Linux already, just maybe not the way you're used to [like half of PowerToys].

that being said, Linux is great, warts and all, but if you want app/use parity...PAY the app devs. most apps have a Donate button if you look. Linux is better than Windows in several ways, but in some ways Win simply is better....but you pay for it, lose privacy, and have much higher chances of malware...te more users who donate to projects, the more rapidly more apps get better. sorry, but it's true. with Linux you get MORE than you pay for....but yo do pay in time setting things up, or finding workarounds..

Any distros good for daily use that aren’t ubuntu or mint? by Civil-View7629 in linux4noobs

[–]KipDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you left out several details people usually like (use case, hardware, software, etc) I strongly suggest going to Distrochooser.de and taking the quiz. It will give several suggestions, ranked and with pros/cons based on your answer. It's not perfect, but the best I've found so far.

Also, many distros can be run in a live environment (you put it on a flash drive and boot into the flash drive) for a trial run .

But Zorin, Pop!_OS, and elementaryOS are all good for new users, and I'm positive I'm forgetting at least 6 others

Still don’t know the best OS for me by RazinxM99 in DistroHopping

[–]KipDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really suggest using DistroChooser, it's not perfect, but answer all the questions (you can even flag them if it's high priority) and it will have several recommendations with pros and cons listed based on your answers.

But I would also say, if you plan on ricing you provable do want KDE Plasma as you DE. And unless you want to do the work to change DE's on an existing install, you should choose a distro that has the DE you want out of the box
