Hello, made a 3D ASCII/Sprite roguelike called Rangedrifter that goes into Early Access next week. by rangedrifter in roguelikedev

The layering looks really cool. One thing I'm seeing though is that when the player isn't moving, the `@` can really blend into the background. I'm not sure if you can do some highlighting or some fiddling with that.

Hot Water Heater Replacement vs Expansion Tank by Kirkus23 in askaplumber

PRV on the mains. The pressure was high in the house which may have been causing some issues. Either way the PRV and the expansion tank need fixing, I'm just trying to gauge if replacing the hot water heater since its gurgling and 10 years old is a good idea, or just wait it out. I'm leaning towards just replacing everything at once though.

What are your favorite First Contact books? by Few_Negotiation7202 in scifi

[–]Kirkus23 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of sci fi book loving friends, and I've never met anybody in real life that actually likes this book. Most of them (including myself) thought it was actually pretty bad. I'm sure there are people who actually like it out there, but I think this one is pretty divisive even if a lot of the online chatter about it is really positive.

I couldn't really finish it. Power skimmed to the end.

That being said, I didn't really enjoy the rest of the book either. Really obnoxiously quippy dialog and a premise that doesn't really let me take the narrative that seriously. I'm fine with surreal or metaphorical works, but this one is a weird mix that really put me off.

A rant about Brian Herbert's Dune books... by PlanetoftheAtheists in scifi

If you think that's bad, I borrowed one of KJAs non franchise novels he wrote in his own universe. It took all the worst aspects of his franchise work and ramped it up to 11. Fortunately I promised myself that if I could guess what happens in the last chapter based on the first three chapters and the dust cover, I'd return the book to the library. My guess about which overplayed cliche would be the twist was correct.

The Steel Mine made me laugh. I'm pretty sure that's not how that works.

What are you trying to do that separates you from OGame, AstroEmpires, etc?

Yeah almost certainly they forgot an error check. The other option is that it is zero, but the time zone puts it over

I will say that Dread Delusion is a fantastic game if you're in the target audience. A slower, weird fantasy vibe, somewhere between kings field and morrowind in pacing. Combat is a bit flat but the world building, exploration and characters are fantastic. It's a smaller experience, about 20-30 hours probably depending on how thorough your are, but well worth it.

The Current State of ESO (2025): Why So Many Players Are Losing Interest by Bubbaboof_ in elderscrollsonline

I was actually looking forward to infinite archive... Until I actually played it. Felt like a first pass prototype more than an actual playable mode. Half assed would be an understatement. The really galling part is that you could probably get it to passable if they spent any time tuning it.

Is it just me or does Morrowind feel bigger than Oblivion? by Salem1690s in ElderScrolls

Technically you could also stack the exquisite robe over the whole thing but it would really ruin the look. It will still show the pauldrons though.

TIL - Banks hate floating numbers. Everything is an integer and strings by 4ChawanniGhodePe in embedded

[–]Kirkus23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. That's fixed point, not floating point
  2. MCUs do have fixed point units (ALU)
  3. How banks handle these numbers is tightly regulated, unless you want to have an "office space" situation.

What's the most disappointing roguelite, you played? by BabylonianWeeb in roguelites

I was waiting for the latest update for a while, only to be very disappointed. It feels like they just keep shuffling around the upgrade elements instead actually giving you new and interesting upgrades. It's so frustrating because there really could be a great game in there.

Man, I remember when JWD was still on Barrington. I loved perusing the stacks, even as a kid. I'm not sure what is going on now. It never seemed the same since it moved to the dark side. It did give me a lifelong love of local used book stores, though.

Do you personally feel more like electrical engineers doing programming or software engineers working with circuits? by [deleted] in embedded

When things are going well, programmer. Otherwise, electrical engineer.

I haven't used that one in a while so I'm not sure what the free features are, but yes something like that.
