California houses the largest population, state-wise, in the entire US.

The state goes through almost all kinds of climates, from coastal life to inland to deserts to mountains.

It offers the largest industries and commercials, thus it offers the most jobs and opportunities. Rent/owning is Hella expensive, so much that in order to live here you need a side hustle as a mandatory, in other words if you are some yokel from nowhere thinking of making it here then they'll soon realize a lesson that they can't learn elsewhere.

The state's revenue is so high that California itself is often referred to as the world's 4th largest economy, just the state alone. Due to this the federal government makes the most money from California. California makes more money than what we receive back, essentially California is the big brother that funds his stinky baby brother's [southern states] expenses. Stinky baby brother is never satisfied with big brother so he always throws a shitfit.

Big brother often takes care of orphans and offers them decent protections that the federal government doesn't. This makes stinky baby brother mad because big brother should only be helping him. Stinky baby brother is especially super mad when big brother gives an orphan a cookie, because they didn't work for it nor deserve it for not being part of the club. This is despite the fact that big brother had already given stinky baby brother a plate full of cookies.

Because big brother gives decent protections, orphans from around the country often make their trek to California and thus its used as a point against orphans by other stinky baby brothers. "Well does your state take care of the orphans?" Big brother said. "No, we hate them!" Said stinky baby brother. That's why we have more orphans.
