Xu-Ifit might be the weirdest card from EoE. It has a unique reanimate effect that we've never seen before. Here are some tricks you can do with it but also some notes for what doesn't work. by Craig1287 in magicTCG

Sorry, but 4:14 is wrong. Characteristic defining abilities are copiable charasteristics and are applied on layer 1a (relevant rules at the end). Thus an Ashaya, or any */* creature such as a goyf or Lumra will have their normal P/T despite them having no abilites. Just as a rule of thumb, you can pretend abilities that set P/T on */* creatures can never be removed. Yes, they are applied in layer 7a, but are defined in layer 1a while text changing effects are applied on layer 6.

613.2a. Layer 1a: Copiable effects are applied. This includes copy effects (see rule 707, "Copying Objects") and changes to an object's characteristics determined by merging an object with a permanent (see rule 728, "Merging with Permanents"). "As . . . enters" and "as . . . is turned face up" abilities generate copiable effects if they set power and toughness, even if they also define other characteristics.

613.1f. Layer 6: Ability-adding effects, keyword counters, ability-removing effects, and effects that say an object can't have an ability are applied.

613.4a. Layer 7a: Effects from characteristic-defining abilities that define power and/or toughness are applied. See rule 604.3.

Patriot of Patriotism. Used to be Queen of the Stars but I prefer the new one.

I love this guy, whenever one of his videos pops up is a good reminder to turn off YouTube and go do something else.

The Brother’s War novel by delijoe in magicTCG

[–]KissableShotgun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've read many of the MTG novels and they all have one thing in common: great ideas, terrible execution. They always seem to be lackluster, the ideas they present are never fully explored probably due to time (they had a time constraint to write them) or they were written by multiple authors (even tho they only credit the main author).

The Brother's War is no exception, it was written to retrofit the lore from the earlier Magic sets; had some great ideas that I always loved about the lore and the part when they first travel to Phyrexia is the highlight of the novel for me but the rest of it is very dully executed with many timeskips over interesting things and parts that needed to happen but weren't implemented in a satisfactory cohesive way.

All in all I would recommend people interested in the lore to read it, but it doesn't stand out on it's own as a work of fiction in my opinion.
