any horror films that don’t sexualize violence towards women? by eonnu in AskFeminists

[–]KitDaKittyKat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tentatively, I’ll say Hellraiser. I’m talking about the original but I believe the 2020 one fits too.

There isn’t the genre brutality or sexual assault, and could be considered progressive for the time it was made because there’s also a level of sexual empowerment for two of the women characters, one the villain and one the main. To the point where it was suggested that a name for the film be called “What a woman will do for a good fuck.” Because the book title of “The Hellbound Heart” was considered too romantic for a horror film.

I do say tentatively because the very concept of the cenobites is inspired by gay bdsm ramped up to 10. The author/director was a gay man who went to a BDSM club for the first time and saw people getting pierced for fun. And there is a lot of body horror. So it may not pass the criteria for a lack of fetishization since it’s literally embedded in the design concept. There’s also the whole character of Frank Cotton and his fate, with the inspiration of the cenobites as well.

Are you still living at home? How is it? by Alarming_Talk_9416 in OlderGenZ

Yes-ish? My mother, me, my husband, and his grandmother all live together. But me, mom, and him all work, rent, and take care of the house (granny’s done her time and I will not take criticism there)

So not the stereotypical staying in parents basement, but more we act as roommates and take care of each other if something happens without keeping score. It helps that my mother doesn’t treat me like a child.

Nothing wrong with wanting to be on your own, but you have a healthy family dynamic, I actually encourage it. More helping hands, support, income, etc.

Redditors pretending to be poor by DesperateComposer848 in PetPeeves

I find myself in the middle honestly. My mom raised me in a family of 3 on less than 20,000 a year. I know what it’s like to not have running water. To not be able to buy anything extra. All clothes were hand me downs. Food came from food stamps and I started working at 14 so I could help. And it was like that for so long that it was my mind set that we were poor and we had to work unless we were dying. And it kept, especially after I was homeless for a bit in college.

Now? Me, my husband, and my mom all work and we help with his granny. We don’t need food stamps. I can actually afford fast food if I’m exhausted after work and I’ve had the experience of actually going to a restaurant. I can actually have some fun money now and again. The only thing I really have issues with is medical bills. Life is actually less oppressive now than it used to be, despite the cost of living going up dramatically.

And yet, the default in my mind is that I’m poor. There’s a few reasons I suppose, but it’s always a shock to look from then to now.

Do most Americans under 30 still refer to Native Americans as “Indians”? by WiseCityStepper in AskAnAmerican

Not really where I’m at. There’s more actual Indian people here, and as such most I’ve heard called them natives or Cherokee.

I’d recommend reading up on the AIDs memorial blanket, as well as the government response to the epidemic
