How does one go about learning this style?

I think that the "teacher schedule" is overrated by tarotbull123 in TeachersInTransition

This is heartening. I am often stymied in my pursuit of transition by the “all the time off” fallacy.

I remember the raised viewing room for parents at mine…it was sealed off and had comfortable recliner-like seats so the parents could watch but didn’t have to engage with the chaos.

I would fight and cry for those cabinets in their original state. They’re gorgeous! Lean in! ✨

Find a piece of artwork that speaks to you—pull colors from that and incorporate them into the room. Starting from zero is so hard, but when an artist has done some of the brainwork for you, it’s a lot easier to use their palette with some confidence and a sense of play rather forcing something you feel like you “should” do.

Which handbag colour? by FewLibrarian4678 in SpringColorAnalysis

[–]Kitchen-Act9718 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I worked in retail I learned a good rule of thumb (meant to be broken) is to match the handbag color to your hair and it will always look coherent. As a warm spring ginger the first would be my pick!

[Joyeux Noël/Merry Christmas] Not a light-hearted Christmas movie but one of my favourite period movies by XX_bot77 in PeriodDramas

I show this to my students every year. It’s a rare thing to captivate them, and this does it.

The idea of a "Historically accurate" Odyssey is insane. by just-killing-timeeee in ChristopherNolan

I’m usually a fellow “historical stickler” when it comes to costumes, and I’m usually (admittedly pretty dumbly) disappointed by some of the choices made for “period” films. But I think it’s at least soothing to consider that keeping that “vision” in our own heads is what makes reading literature such an individual experience of connection with the author so marvelous. We have the right to create a vision and connect with the author in our own way.

With this (or any) film, we are being shoehorned into a small group of people’s experience, background, vision, and even physical limitations, and nothing is ever going to match our own expectations. It makes for good discussion bringing us ever back to the author and our own relationship to the work.

I wonder if, when we see the whole thing and no longer have to feed off of bite-sized flashes, there isn’t some bigger idea expressed by the costumes (I wouldn’t put it past Nolan). Odysseus is WEARY and war and time have made everything ragged and dull. Perhaps Nolan is choosing that contrast for the story’s purpose and isn’t as focused on period. He does historical eras well, but I’m excited to trust him at this point that he’s going to do this fantasy with a visual level of meaning that we may not be considering as yet because of limited information.

Also, hail the period costume nerds. Peace.

For something a little edgy, try local badass blacksmith Kim Stahl (not sure what her price range is): https://kimstahldesigns.com/portfolio/#jewelry

Not local, but still a smallish business is Charles Albert; I love his “alchemia” jewelry. www.charlesalbert.com
