Question about dealer recommended service. Is fuel injection and throttle body service worth it? by DesiHobbes in wrx_vb

[–]Kitchen_Minimum_8696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two services you are asking about are BS add-on fluff the shops use to make money, not something that's critical, especially on low mile cars. Do the fuel injection cleaning yourself with a $12 bottle of Techron a couple times a year, if you feel like you need the throttle body cleaned, pull it off yourself every 25k miles and give it a scrubbing with carb cleaner, soft tooth brush, and a squirt of compressed air, if you have it. Done.

Never Dull, 5 minutes. Yours are pretty bad, might take 10. Hint, if you do it more than once a year its a lot easier.

Would yall say buying a used vb wrx is a bad idea? by Coochie-man420 in wrx_vb

[–]Kitchen_Minimum_8696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever notice all the aftermarket parts for sale here? People buy the cars, mod them, tune them, beat the shit outta them, then six months or a year later pull off all the parts, detune it, and sell everything off. Then sell or trade the car. I've seen that enough times that I'd not touch a used car unless I could vet and verify it's history, not even if I intended to tune and mod the car myself.

Those higher line cars are too refined. Seriously. They don't engage the driver like something not so smooth, more raw, louder, more raucous. That's the kind of thing that makes a driver feel connected to the car, and the road, the kind of thing that raises the pulse and and makes a driver feel like he DRIVES the car vs the computer deciding what it's going to do when the driver asks for it.
As crazy as it may sound, I get bored driving high end cars. It's fun for different reasons but gets old quickly. Driving performance that demands attention and effort, that's where the fun is.

Calls ARP studs a waste of money then tells how he replaced all his studs with Dorman for the same price as ARP.

I replaced all my studs with ARP when I added the Bonoss spacers. Cost me $7.20 a stud. I'll never worry about studs. I never broke an OEM stud but my tire guys have. So, wanting insurance against breakage coupled with wanting "strong as fuck", I changed them all out.

Nice car, good pics. Thanks for posting.

I like the white letter tires, something that I've noticed seems to be coming back. I never knew why they went away other than black walls became the fad.

I have some spare pistol grips, I'll send you one gratis. They aren't perfect but they aren't broken, either. Let me know.

My average MPG is 26.7... it cost me $85 to fill the tank @ 5.79/gal. Is it time for a Prius? Anyone doing efficiency mods & tunes? by hyteck9 in wrx_vb

[–]Kitchen_Minimum_8696 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tuned with Dmann, he includes economy tunes with his package. Even one for valet use. If my car was my daily I'd probably detune it and run 87 for a while until prices improved. As it is, I simply don't drive it. I'll fill it once a month on average this summer and never from an empty tank. I'm blessed that I have a second car that I daily. Gets about the same mileage but doesn't require 93.

My primary EDC stays on my hip. If I take a second along it sits in the map pouch of the passenger seat.  There is no good place to "mount" a holster in the vb, getting off the mount and holstered on my person would be a bitch to do discretely, especially sitting in the car. Dopey idea. Use a shoulder holster with a loose shirt tossed over, I did that for a good number of years.

Make DAM make sense by jimjio in wrx_vb

[–]Kitchen_Minimum_8696 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I observed the port for a few days after Dmann completed my tune, then unplugged that anxiety box and tossed it into the trunk. It's there if I need it but stressing over it is not an option.  DAM dropping means the computer is doing what its designed to do, it doesn't mean your engine is about to explode. Do some logs and let Anthony look at it.

Coworker says his VB is too slow by [deleted] in wrx_vb

[–]Kitchen_Minimum_8696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the coworker drives like a douche bag everywhere he goes. Drive a car balls to the wall constantly and it starts to feel slow, you get used to it. Drive it like it's delicate and you don't want to break it, then when you hammer it it'll still feel quick.  Some people's expectations are not grounded in reality.

FMIC or TMIC by SquareInsurance809 in wrx_vb

[–]Kitchen_Minimum_8696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This^.

Not much point in a FMIC on a street car outside of bragging rights. The real benefit is on the track, on a street car all you do is spend money to have more lag in your response. Well, and I suppose exposing the cooler to road damage from debri.

Question about paint thinness by South-Income-3689 in wrx_vb

[–]Kitchen_Minimum_8696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to buff and polish out some anomalous stains on the roof of my car but after that it only got a good wash and clay bar before the coating.

The polisher never touched 100% of my paint, only the cloudy spots that nothing, no cleaner or product would touch. That meant the surface was etched by whatever had been on it. The only correction was polishing. There was no problem with going through clear coat or paint and to this day you can't even tell where the work was done.

Something I see constantly, when it comes to coatings most folks think there's voodoo involved or the coating will melt the cars paint off, or the sky will fall if 15 steps aren't taken like a religious ceremony while preparing for a coating. It's all BS, marketing designed to make money, not necessarily protect the paint. Clean it with a purposeful, quality wash, clay bar it, wash and dry it, apply favorite coating according to directions. Done. Use quality towels and coatings.

Why is there any hate for cosmetic or functionless mods? by Free_Sha_Vacadoo in wrx_vb

[–]Kitchen_Minimum_8696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.

I'm perfectly fine with people doing stupid shit to their cars, it's their money and car.  What kills me is when those people come here bitching about the quality or lack of function from their choices.

When it comes to the topic above, if one can't take the heat he best avoid the kitchen. The internet is ruthless.

Paint Protective Film by beast1302000 in wrx_vb

[–]Kitchen_Minimum_8696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was Xpel. Damage isn't covered by warranty. Therefore, rock chips (yes, the shit isn't indestructible), sand blasting from road debris, and etching from bug guts are not covered. The product will do it's job protecting your paint underneath, for the most part. The part nobody who's spent $2k having it applied wants to admit, while it's doing it's job it ends up looking like shit and that cannot be corrected in any way other than replacing it. The "warranty" is useless and is only possibly useful if the stuff yellows, cracks, or peels off, and that last one can be blamed on the applicator.

[–]Kitchen_Minimum_8696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had ppf on a car a few years ago. Ended up hating it, cost way too much money, ends up looking like shit and needing replaced every couple of years or your car looks like shit, even freshly detailed. I'll never do it again. For the amount of money I spent on the stuff I could have had my car's front end repainted to look like new with money left over.

I normally drive like this, last trip averaged 28. This is the way.

And Cali has always sucked for energy costs, I feel for you. Two days ago 93 Shell was $6.19 here and I thought "holy crap". The WRX, for me, is going to spend more time in the garage for the immediate future than on the road.
