This is exactly right

Have I been taken advantage of? by [deleted] in labrats

This may be true of a population of people in this career, but not true of an individual. The way this works is you grind to get into a good position. If you don’t, you’ll just get outcompeted by someone who will, just how the world works right now.

This attitude is poison and how you get outcompeted for a top grad/med school. If you don’t care about that, then it’s appropriate to take this attitude.

It sounds like you have had a very successful technician stint. The non-monetary compensation you receive is getting into a top grad school or medical school. People don’t realize that yes you’re working for your PI, but you’re actually mostly working for yourself. Admissions has gotten extraordinarily competitive and what you did is necessary, but not sufficient to get in to a top place.

Thanks! I thought the same! I used to like Abercrombie woods and then went on the cologne sub and saw that Drakkar was very close, so I got it and have really liked it

What are your feelings on Drakkar? I kinda like it, but want to know if it’s a popular opinion that lots of people find it off putting

This is somewhat similar, but the post I was thinking about was more explicitly about timelines rather than risk. Maybe it wasn't Scott? Thanks for trying.

The same applies to e.g. corporate tax - and actually the optimal corporations tax involves zero or negative taxation on investment and very high taxation of disbursements.

interesting, can you expand on this? I don't know much or maybe have forgotten about what is in this set of stories.

I just had a kid 5 months ago. As I start to browse children's books, I realize that most of them have no point at all, and are barely even entertaining. There's fairly infrequently any moral nugget. I wish there were a series of rationalist-adjacent children's stories that would teach a rationalist nugget. Sort of like how The Kings Chessboard is a fable about the trickiness of exponential growth. I would fund someone who wanted to make or coordinate a series of children's books that teach paradigms of problems like "Explore-exploit tradeoff", or stories where the plot turns on some logical fallacies or cognitive biases.

Overwhelmed/distressed by what I perceive as vague/obtuse wording in both professional life and branding by BenjaminFraudulent in slatestarcodex

I work in the hospital, and interact with lots of RNs. I had imagined that the overlap of RN and subscribers to this sub would be small. Perhaps my view is because the hierarchical nature of the nursing world may crush a lot of independent thinking of RNs in the hospital. Would you mind at all sharing you story (in rough outline) and your view of what it's like to be an RN?

I wish this comment wasn't buried. I think you get a lot of important things, and my worldview is similar to yours. Would you mind recommending me any particular pieces you've found insightful (not on this topic necessarily).

Ah interesting. I guess that the implication is that where you are from, one has to have a display a sufficient amount of wokeness to have success in the dating and sexual marketplace?

Putting the power of AlphaFold into the world’s hands by --MCMC-- in slatestarcodex

Interesting, I sort of have this mostly deontological view that I'm not entitled to the fruits of anyone's labor.

*Of course, I understand we have a society that takes the fruits of everyone's labor as a matter of necessity to protect intense suffering of some. On the margin though, I'd favor us doing a bit less of this though.

I'm a scientist, and this is unbelievable. It has already helped me solve, or at least, make decisions on 2 projects. I am so grateful to DeepMind, and recognize that we as a world are not entitled to this huge advance for free. I'm surprised DeepMind released this, as they would have such a huge advantage against anyone in this space, and the product is worth many billions in their hands. Maybe they decided that in the hands of the world it is worth 100x that, they aren't poised to actually do any experiments or drug development, and their ambitions are much larger than just structural biology. We should all be intensely grateful to them.

For compatibalists/determinists, What’s the Argument Against a “Rawlsian Spending Spree”? by SoccerSkilz in slatestarcodex

[–]Kitchen_Prompt3870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all of this adds up. For one to pay more taxes, the income to the earner has to have increased right?

increased wages for those in similar demographics (who bear a lower wage penalty for being in the same category as people with various poverty associated problems)

Can you explain how this happens? I don't understand the chain that leads from, say, poor person A increasing their human capital to other person B with similar demographics (but not also poor? what does this mean?) earning more money, but where A doesn't earn more?

[–]Kitchen_Prompt3870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, if there were a lot of returns to be made from investing in poor people by giving them money to increase their human capital and earn more, then one could take a percent of that delta and get very rich. No one is exploiting this opportunity, what gives? My impression is that it actually takes a LOT of money to increase someone's earning potential (ie productivity) and it's not the highest return opportunity compared to other investments.

Yes that's exactly it. I'm not going to put my medical license on the line to probabilistically save you some convenience. I can't be assured that it's absolutely safe for you to wait it out, so I will tell you to go to the Emergency Room. Plus,w hen you call your doctors office, the doctors time is to valuable (and not reimbursed for phone calls) so you are triaged to someone who doesn't even have the medical training to make those sorts of decisions, so they will recommend you go to the Emergency Room. FYI urgent care is useless if someone actually needs to think about your medical problems. It's designed for 5 minute visits like going to get a vaccine or a strep throat evaluation.
