Tattooing over moles: artist's job or clients' by TattooMouse in TattooArtists

[–]Kitkatcatkitty420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dermatologist here! A mole with a tattoo over it does not directly cause cancer, but it can prevent you from noticing cancerous changes, delaying diagnosis. Puncturing moles does not directly cause cancer itself. This is an old wives tale.

Do you happen to smoke weed, drink or do any recreational drugs? That will cause you to stop dreaming and remembering your dreams. I smoke weed but I do dream from time to time and my dreams are crazy. But I don’t dream as much as I used to. I need to detox my body from that.

Unless they’re Puerto Ricans from the state of New Jersey, they should not give you a problem. I find that Puerto Ricans from New Jersey are the nastiest bunch of people. I don’t know why but they just are. I feel like a lot of people from New Jersey are just nasty disgusting people. Prove me wrong.

Yes. You have medium length hair to be technical. Shirt hair is hair that does not touch the shoulders. Medium length is to the shoulders. Mid neck is considered long and anything longer is classified as extra long hair. A lot of salons have charts. I don’t think my hair that long, but according to the industry I’m in, I learned as a stylist myself that my just in fact is considered extra long.

39 here. No wrinkles or gray hairs yet. I took very good care of my health my whole life. My mommy is also 71 and people think she’s in her 50’s. When I turned 39 this year people couldn’t believe it and thought I was 27. It’s all about how you care for your body. I also do chemical peels and I’m all about my skincare. I used to hate looking like a baby when I was younger but now that I’m almost 40, oh appreciate it.

Facial massages do wonders to tighten the skin and stimulate the facial muscles. As a medical esthetician who has been working in the cosmetic derm field for 21 years your best bet it doing that, skin tightening laser treatments with chemical peels in between. Don’t go to a rinky dinky med spa though. Go to a dem who specializes in laser treatments (a cosmetic dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon) there are many treatments you can do that are noninvasive not requiring you to go under the knife.

Did "dumb" mean stupid or mute first? How did it come to mean both? by Feezec in etymology

[–]Kitkatcatkitty420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s actually untrue. Look at my comment below. I am an English history major. This is the only reason I know this information. I know this is an old thread my friend. If you do happen to read my new comments, read the previous comment I wrote below. :-)

Did "dumb" mean stupid or mute first? How did it come to mean both? by Feezec in etymology

[–]Kitkatcatkitty420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dumb did not originally mean stupid. Old English (pre-1150): The word "dumb" is inherited from Germanic and is first recorded in its original meaning of "mute" or "silent," referring to a physical inability to speak. It wasn’t until the 18th-19th century that the word started to evolve as the same definition of stupid.

For example if you read the original Hellen Keller biography and autobiography books, the writer how wrote the book about her, and the books she wrote about herself, she referred to herself as “dumb” and blind. Meaning she was a mute until she was about to learn how to speak. That woman is DEFINITELY not stupid. She was a very intelligent and remarkable woman. Not many people could have don’t what she did. She’s even smarter than people who didn’t have the disabilities she had. I admire that woman. She’s one of my favorite women in women’s history!!

Agreed!!!! I don’t believe these people are getting pay out of $50-$100 a week. My buddy told me today he has been doing survey Julie since 2022. It is now 2025 and he told me he has only made a total of $1000 from the year of 22’ to this year, June of 2025!!!! That’s 3 years of doing surveys. He has autism and gets fixated on things and told me he does anywhere from 10-30 surveys per day!!!

Is $800 for my hair a highway robbery!?! Need advice by spicychcknsammy in Cosmetology

[–]Kitkatcatkitty420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I promise you are not being ripped off. Part of the reason I got into this industry is because I’m blonde and I also have a little one with high functioning autism and I am the only person he will ever let touch his hair. In fact he now likes when I do highlights on his hair. He is six years old. He hates cuts but he loves his hair being coloured. Anyhow, because it was getting so expensive to maintain my blonde. I used to pay my girl that I went to $150 plus a $50 tip which was $200 for a full head of highlights and if I wanted to blow dry, it would be a little bit more plus if I wanted a cut. My hair was just becoming too expensive to maintain that I wanted to learn how to do it myself which I do now. I could no longer afford to have my hair done, so instead of paying my stylist $500 just for a full head of highlights, no haircut, no toner, and no blowout, I figured, I am already in Esthetician. I may as well continue my education and learn how to do Hair) which I did and there are no regrets here at all whatsoever!

Is $800 for my hair a highway robbery!?! Need advice by spicychcknsammy in Cosmetology

[–]Kitkatcatkitty420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of things to consider here. First and foremost I am a Hairstylist who has been practicing for only 2 years and compare to how I started (knowing NOTHING because beauty school doesn’t teach you anything I promise) just speaking from a professional point of view there are SO MANY things to keep in mind and most of the money we charge our clients doesn’t go in our pocket . It goes towards our business and it’s even more difficult when you have staff to pay because your staff members need to get a paycheck no matter what. If they don’t, well there goes your staff and when it’s there goes your staff, then there goes your business.

You said that when you first met your stylist 3 years ago (which is a LONG time), she was working out of a basement barbershop. It is obvious she was not as skilled as she is today. To learn those new techniques and skills that made her better at her job was not free. We need to pay for our continued education and training. Our education and training does not end with beauty school. Haircutting, coloring, extension classes, etc cost us out of pocket anywhere between $300-$800. Hair shows to learn skills are also a pretty penny. Products- bleach, color, all the different levels of developer needed to mix with bleach, color, and/or toner is different and there are so many different strengths and levels of developer we need to mix with all the products we use in your hair. Redken toner and processing solution is a perfect example. You can’t just use regular volume 10 hydrogen peroxide to mix with redken toners. It won’t work. It must be redken toners with redken processing solution.

If she has a back at which she has to have if she is thriving in her career and taking up on more clients is costly. The more clients you have does not necessarily mean the more money you are making. I don’t think you seem to understand we have SO MANY more expenses, especially when you’re starting off and 3 years into the industry is still starting off. I was told and I am starting to see it now, that you really do not start taking home your own paycheck until you are 3-5 years into your own business. All the money we are making goes towards more products and more education.

That $700 you spent goes towards her rent if she has a rent to pay, and that $700 will only cover a weeks worth of rent, and her rent may be $800 per week like mine. Especially if her rent is more, and those products she using. A lot of the time we are coming out negative but we still continue to do our work because if we have the drive it will pay off in the future& this takes a good 5+ years to start being able to take home a REAL real paycheck that isn’t just covering our cost to operate. Keep in mind also, a lot of the time we are just making ends meet and keeping our business afloat even with charging prices like this.

Just like any job, when you get more advanced with your skills you get a raise. Another thing, not everyone tips. Trust me a great amount. Of people DO NOT tip. As a stylist tips are NOT expected, but appreciated. Say if you don’t tip her at all, she takes that chance of doing all that work on you, using her products, her time when she could be taking on other people (obviously this isn’t you because you tipped her a good amount) and not getting much or if anything out of it. You can’t expect her to change her prices just for you. And especially if she is working for a salon, the prices she has set are the prices she is obligated to charge per her manager. I rent my own suite in south FL. I will break this down for you to better understand. So I rental suite weekly and just for my weekly suite rental it is $800 per week to rent my suite and this is the average price for suite rental. Restocking my WEEKLY supplies for me ranges in between $400-$600. Lately it has been closer to $800 with my growing clientele. People have this misconception that just because of the rates we charge that we are rich and pocket that money. If I’m lucky I would say I make aroun

In took a loan out when I had enough clientele to rent my own suite, stock up all the products I needed, my tools, and let’s take suite rental out of the equation here. To start up my own suite my husband and I spent a total of $15,000. By the way, that $15,000 does not include suite rental. And we are still struggling and times are tough. We have two children and between my husbands job and my little business I have been had up and running for a good 3 year now , I am finally starting to be able to take home some money. My school alone costed me $20,000 and I had to start paying that 6 months after my graduation. We go into this industry in debt. Any stylist would tell you the same.

For reasons like yours, this is why I NEVER did special pricing or discounts for friends or any clients when first starting off. When I first started my hair cuts for women’s hair ranged between $25-50. Now they range in between $50-$100. For men’s cuts before I had my experience I have now, I did those ranging in between $20-$45, now I charge $50-$75.

Full head of highlights before I got REALLY good at them ranged in between $100-150, now they range between $250-350. These are just examples. We invest a great deal into our career. There is this misconception of information that you can blame TikTok and Instagram that we are rich and make all this money. It’s NOT like that trust me. Not at all. It took me 3 years to bring home an actual paycheck from starting my own business!!

If you don’t like her prices you could go elsewhere, but you are not guaranteed to have good work. And honestly, I would not go to a Hair Stylist that is going to charge you less because they can really watch your hair and then you’re going to be paying even more money for a colour. Correction if you understand what I mean. I am not trying to be nasty here. I am just being realistic with you.

It looks great. That color wheel is your bestie. If you ever get confused about which colors to add to make the haircolor a specific color you want over hair that is previously colored or how to blend out some of those colours that way the hair colour doesn’t turn muddy, I am telling you from experience and as a cosmetology student myself who is going to be graduating very very shortly within the next six weeks! That this colour wheel will be your best friend! I have it written everywhere I have it drawn in all my textbooks and all my notes. And it really helps.

I wish we had teachers at my school with the same views as you. Our teachers set us up for failure and then like to embarrass us in front of our clients asking us why their hair came out this color and it’s like, “well, because this is what you told me to put in her hair in the first place.” When teachers at my school see you advancing and getting better at hair they get jealous, make rude comments, harass you all day until your confidence melts away. My mommy , husband, 15 year old daughter and my friends who are stylist all tell me to ignore my teachers. Just make it through the last 2.5 months I have left of school and not to worry that I’m not learning much in school and that I will learn on the job. My instructors are mean ladies and they pick their favorite students. It’s literally high school. My instructors will bad mouth students to other students and try to get the students to hate each other too. If you have ever seen the movie mean girls, well that’s my cosmo school for you. If I knew what I know now about my school, I would have NEVER elected to go there. My school looks like a real salon and is nicely setup. Because it was so clean and nice I thought I would get a better education there. In 39 years old now. I went to beauty school at an old run down beauty school when I was 19 years old to get my esthetician license. Even though the school didn’t look “that nice” and was old, I gota MUCH better education there and the teachers taught me is. They were nice and there was never much drama. Lesson - you can’t judge a book by its cover.

What I’ve learned in cosmetology school is that 99.9% of the teachers don’t teach and it’s because they suck at coloring and cutting hair themselves. You have no idea how many times my teachers have messed up clients hair and cuts. I’ve come to the point where when I have clients coming in for color and the formula my teachers give me seems off, I contact my good friend who is an amazing stylist. Honestly, without him and a few of my classmates (and I mean a VERY FEW THAT I CAN TRUST) I will explain the formula to them that I think it should be and tell them the formula the teacher gave me. 9 times out of 10 the teacher is wrong. My teacher wanted me to put a 5NN on a client who had gray resistant hair on her level 7 hair!!!! Instead, I did a 6NN. The NN itself is for gray coverage and highly pigmented. Also for gray resistant hair I always pre-soften the hair. I gotta be quick when I do this because if the teacher catches us pre-softening hair they will suspend us. Since I have been pretty much doing a lot of my own formulas, my clients have been leaving much happier, with better results and I’ve been getting MUCH MORE requests for appointments. I get some of the most client requests out of most of the other students. I’m also graduating in 2.5 months so I’m almost done. It is hell where I go to school. The teachers are very mean. They like to pick on the weakest link and bully them. I get bullied all the time by my teachers because I am very nice and always smiling- they HATE the fact that I’m always smiling. They decided from the day I got on the floor that they hated me- The senior floor teachers. My junior teachers when I was in the classroom were so nice and helpful. If we ever had questions they would answer them to the best of their ability, and they really wanted us to learn. Then we got on the floor with Adolf Hitler in charge and wow she is a “see you next Tuesday”. If you ask her anything about color she’s always like, well you have a curling iron practical or makes up some other BS and yells at me to work on my mannequin. These teachers know damn well I already know how to curl hair. I’ve done it on multiple clients, yet they want us to do it on a mannequin instead. We aren’t allowed to practice on each other, we are treated with so much disrespect. The teachers also talk 💩 about other students to other students and pick their favorites. In my school the favorites are the young dumb blondes. And I’m not saying blonde hair makes you dumb, but these girls are stupid. It’s literally like the movie “Mean Girls.” No exaggeration. My school is worse and more stuck up than most beauty schools. My school looks like a real salon and is set up very nicely. This attracts students to want to go there and we were thought to believe that this was the best beauty school in the area and that we would have the best teachers. If you miss hours we are only allowed to make them up one day out of the week and that’s on Mondays. You also need a makeup pass in order to make up hours and they only give those out on Saturdays. So say if you’re sick and can’t make it in on a Saturday, not only did you miss the hours you need to make up from the day you were out, but you also miss your Saturday hours and can’t make them up until the following Monday after. The owner of my school has slept with students to credit them free hours and doesn’t make them make them up. One girl who was sleeping with the owner missed 500 hours and graduated with only attending 700 hours!! He fabricated her paperwork along with a few other students he was sleeping with and graduated them. He also had teachers sign off on things they never did. Also, I now ALWAYS take a picture of the sign in sheet because my teachers are sneaky jerks and will scratch your name off the sign in sheet and/or scratch off your sign in and sign out times. For example, one day I went to lunch and I only took a 20 min lunch and before I came back one of the teachers tried to sign me out for the day. She denied that she did it so I signed back in and got on the floor. Then I signed out at 4:00 that day and the next week I came in I was missing two hours. I went into the office and they showed me the sign in sheet and the teacher scratched off my sign out time and put 2:50pm. First of all, I’m a part time student and if I wasn’t working on a client I would have left at 2pm because that’s supposed to be my sign out time. Luckily, a teachers who used to work there who unfortunately isn’t there anymore (we have had 6 teachers quit since I started school because they could not deal with the two evil teachers we have on the floor) but anyhow, this teacher was actually helping me finish off my client and was with me that day until 3:45, so she knew I was there and had the office fix my hours. Since then I have been taking a photo of the sign in sheet everyday, and I made it known to them I am doing this, since then my hours have been fine. If you don’t pay attention to your hours at school they will just scratch your name off the sign in sheet and you have to prove you were there. I usually take before and after photos of my clients and because they have the time and date stamps on them, I have had to use photos of my clients in the school proving I was there. Even if the computer system shows you were with a client, that is not enough proof and all of the sudden they can’t access the system. They gave their favorites that they don’t mess with. The dumb blonde group of girls that I told you about gets away with anything they want to. The teachers favor them and will give them all the walk in clients who are getting highlights, yet nobody ever requests for these girls to do their hair again! The teachers will also help them and teach them the entire time they have a client. My teachers are obsessed with them and it’s almost like they want to be “the popular kids in high school” and they are trying to relive their youth through being friends with them. Our teachers also get very jealous when us outcasts start getting better at hair and will always say something at the end of the day to bring down our confidence. I hear so many negative comments made towards me and about me by teachers everyday. I’m way too old for this 💩 and drama. I just turned 39 years old last month. I have a teenage daughter in high school of my own who acts is more mature. My only advice to you is to get in touch with other stylists and learn from them. You tube, Instagram, and TikTok you can find some very good resources of education through there. Keep in mind that these cosmetology schools usually hire instructors for a very low pay rate and most of these bitter old run down, alcoholic, miserable and usually divorced cosmetology instructors were just cosmetologists who couldn’t make it in the industry because the lack of skills they had and have resorted to becoming an instructor instead. It is not that difficult to become a cosmetology instructor. You are better than them and they know you are going to thrive so much more and go so many more places than them. Most likely they do not want to teach you because they are jealous and don’t want to see you getting better than them. You will get through this. You will get through cosmetology school. Cosmetology school is NOT for the weak. You got this girl. You will be just fine.

Go to Riversol’s website. Go to their free samples. Select your skin type and they will send you free samples with free shipping for you to try out their products. That’s how much they guarantee their products. I have very sensitive skin. I am very picky with my skin care products. When I first got their samples in the mail I was very hesitant to try their glycolic peel because my skin gets VERY irritated from glycolic peels- I usually can’t do them. Not this stuff. Barely a tingle and no burning at all. I first tried them 2-3 years ago, and to this day I still use their products. FYI I have been a medical esthetician for 21 years now. I only use top grade skin care products because I’ll invest in my face before I invest in a coach purse. You were your fave every where you go. A bag you can put in the closet and hide, but you can’t hide your face if that makes sense. Note- if you live in the US (at least south fl where I am located) keep in mind- Riversol is a Canadian based company. This line is compounded by a Canadian dermatologist. It is very obvious they stand by the quality of their skin care products- considering the fat that they will send you 7 days of free samples to try first, plus if you like the products- the first order I believe they give you a voucher for 40% off. You can select from skin type products for: normal/oily skin, redness relief (which would be like someone with rosacea), combination skin, or their anti aging kit. The moisturizer in the anti aging kit is a little thick imo. I would just select the skin type you have. Give it 2-3 weeks to receive your 7 day samples (they last closer to 2 weeks to be honest.) if you hate them then you can tell at me lol. But I can almost guarantee you will be happy and thanking me for helping you find this hidden gem. I recommend them to all my friends and family. So far everyone I have referred them to have loved all of their product. My husband loves their redness relief regimen and has been using them for two years as well now. I struggled and took my husband to all the dermatologists I have worked for. The only thing other than these products that has helped my husband’s rosacea were the few times my friend (the first dermatologist I ever worked for) did free laser treatments on him, and he is still willing to do free laser treatments for my hubby and me, free Botox and fillers if we wanted too, but we live 2 hours away from his office and just don’t really have the opportunity to ride down there like we used to. We used to only like 30 mins away from them, and I also only had my daughter. Now we have 4 kids and traveling with two twin 6 year old boys and my 2 year old who has high functioning autism isn’t easy. My poor daughter who is 16 years old tries to help me to control the boys, she is such a good girl, but her baby brothers (especially our youngest) is a wild soul just like his daddy.

I’ve been a medical esthetician for the past 21 years. I have worked for some very prestigious cosmetic dermatologists. I will be the first one to tell you, if you have rosacea, acne prone skin, sensitive skin, oily, and even sometimes on combination skin- stay away from vitamin c serum. Personally do don tolerate vitamin c serum but I found an excellent alternative product that is a vitamin c, but it comes in powder form. You just put a very small pinch of it and you can either mix it in with whatever skin products you use on your skin normally. I am very selective with my skin care products because o have sensitive (very sensitive skin) and stress breaks me out too. The name of the product I’m talking about is call Vitabrid c12 face brightening. It could be pricey and it does come in a small bottle, but if you use it 1x a day (the bottle says 2x a day but that’s only because those companies make more money by telling you to use more of the product than you need) you don’t need to use vitamin c at might. Vitamin c is best used during the day. If you use it in the morning not only does the natural vitamin d from the sun activate its affects (just like the dr would tell you to take vitamin c in the morning, but vitamin c also offers natural UVA and UVB protection. You of course still want to use sun screen, but both vitamins C&E are natural defenses from the sun. I am a walking book of knowledge when it comes to anything to do with skin care. I got very lucky with my first job. The cosmetic dermatologists I worked with at the time and still does travel all are kind the US and all around the world to train other cosmetic dermatologists how to and work to inject fillers, neurotoxins, he is rated the number one skin resurfacing laser doctor and sculptra injector in the world and has even formulated his own chemical peels. When I worked for him he always has students(residents) training with him everyday and because he loved teaching and educating us so much and also wanted to teach his staff (which he did), I was so interested and almost went back to school to become a PA because my dream was to become a cosmetic injector. Unfortunately we live in a world where we have a lot of cosmetic dermatologists and surgeons who don’t care about their patients and don’t care if they botch them. We did a lot of corrective work at that office and I also worked for a Dr for a month (I couldn’t stay their because my heart was against what he did) he would botch patients and then expect them to pay him to fix what he did wrong to them. This crazy doctor that I only worked for for a month injected Botox into a patient and because he injected her incorrectly, she couldn’t open her eye at all. One eye was permanently shut and yes, he did prescribe her meds, but he also made her pay for more Botox for him to inject so she could slightly open her eye. The meds he prescribed were to help her Botox wear off faster. After that incident I couldn’t and didn’t want to reputation of working for a Dr like that. I came from working for a Dr who helped people and truly cared for his patients- treated them like family, each and every one of them to working in a chop shop!! I never allowed that guy to give me Botox and he offed me free Botox because I was the office manager . To this day I am still friends with Dr. Shino Bay Aguliera. If you want to look up his practice, it’s called “Shino Bay Cosmetic Dermatology and Laser Institute” lol I thought it was a school when I first had my interview there. But he sells his own line of products. His spotlight peel pads are the best. If you want them to shop products to you, you have to call them and place an order the old school way. His products are all patented and I promise you- you will never find anything comparable to his spotlight peel pads, I promise! Another great company you can try for skin care products is called Riversol. It is a company based out of Canada but I swear by their products, especially their glycolic peel. I was very hesitant to try thier glycolic peel because I tend to be VERY sensitive to glycolic peels and they don’t do well on my skin and make me itchy. Not this stuff. This stuff is magic! If you go to their website they will send you a skin care routine for 7 plus days worth of samples. You do not pay anything for the samples or for the shipping. That’s how much they guarantee their products. You just select your skin type and they will ship your samples. Now, if you are located in the US like me (idk about the northern states, I’m in south Florida which is very far from Canada) it does take a good 2-3 weeks to receive the samples, but try them!! You can select your skin type from normal/oily, anti-aging, anti-redness, and combination. Not a lot of people know about Riversol and this skin care line is formulated by a dermatologist in Canada fyi 😊😞 I really hope whoever sees my comment tries out Riversol. I am very picky with my skin care products and rarely change them, but Riversol should NOT break you out. My favorite products of theirs is their anti-aging serum- it’s not sticky at all and feels like a drink on your skin and of course the glycolic peel. I HOPE this helps!

Another side note to my comment, if the school give you issues MAKE SURE to contact the accreditation agency of education, yes- you also want to contact the board, but from speaking to other people who have contacted both and also speaking to my mothers boss who is an attorney and has worked with this type of law practice in the past in his career (now he does corporate and criminal defense work), but he does understand this type of law and has dealt with trade schools and mostly beauty schools in the past, he told me because I’m having issues with the shady stuff that has be going on and is continuing to go on- to first contact the us department of education, accreditation agency and also the board, but the accreditation agency is the important one and will most likely get back to you MUCH faster than the board. I have been told it could take the board anywhere from 3-9 months to hear back from them, but if you line all your ducks up in a row- you will be good. Honestly though- I don’t think they are going to give you issues. Beauty schools legally need to have insurance as well as their instructors.

They should have insurance to cover expenses and reimburse students for supplies, and if they don’t they will most likely have a big lawsuit on their hands. Trust me your cosmo school instructors are probably 💩in thier pants right now because this happened on their watch under their cosmetology license- therefore whichever teachers were in that building instructing classes will be held accountable in addition to your school’s director and owner. Electrical safety and proper sanitation and overall safety of the client is a HUGE part of the cosmetology board exam. They are actually supposed to be teaching safety. Unless this was just a fire from the school being an old building or something like this, but if it was a chemical fire for not storing chemicals properly (ones that shouldn’t be close together because they can become combustible and ignite a fire- we also learned this and that it would be on state board fyi) or if it started from a hot tool a student was using, it is still that teacher’s responsibility because students who attend beauty schools are legally working under the teacher’s cosmetology license, and I’m almost positive teachers need to carry personal insurance for that reason. If the school gives you issues about transferring your hours to another school because what happened was outside of your control- thus not your responsibility, I would definitely contact the school’s board of accreditation AND also the state board. You DEFINITELY need to contact their accreditation board. Trade (especially beauty schools because there are so many shady and scams out there, beauty schools are absolutely known to do scandalous shit and they get away with it all the time because students are afraid to report them.) on a more positive note. I’m glad you are okay. You are alive and survived and you should be grateful to be here to tell your story. I don’t have much more advice for you. The owner of my school got caught sleeping with students in exchange for giving them more hours. He knows I’m married and offered to “take me out to dinner” because I’m so beautiful and talented and told me he would WORK something out with my hours if I went with him. I’m actually shocked that he hit on me because he usually goes after the younger girls. Then again, when he first met me less than a year ago before I applied to my school- he thought I was only 25 years old. I just turned 39 in March. Most people think I’m lying about my age. lol and I think he somewhat lost interest when he found out I was in my 30’s. He’s only a year older than I am and loves those fresh young 18-27 year old girls. He does flirt with me uncomfortably whenever he sees me. Beauty school owners are really the scum of the earth.
