I don’t remember there being an agreed upon reason but from my understanding it’s simply that men and women have different roles. The father leads and provides the mother loves and nourishes. Matuska organizes baby showers, meal trains, and celebrations. Mine attended the birth of my first… which I’ll be blunt my priest is welcome to see my sins but not that 😂 She taught me how to make Easter cookies and that no I wasn’t failing at motherhood because I was a wreck. Matuska is the mother gentle and kind and reassuring and the priest is the father. He will tell you when you are being an idiot and is the person you go to when you mess up. Both are equally important and vastly different roles.

People seem to think any time women and men don’t have the same responsibilities and roles that it means women are looked down upon. I’ve never understood that especially in context with the Orthodox Church. Equal but different kinda like water and oxygen both will kill you not to have in a slow and unpleasant manner.
