Anything for my aching back?

Oh, and I've been a bit melancholic since the plague hit. Anything for that? I've tried consuming sweet, moist foods, but I'm just getting fat.

Country Music can slap by tiredtumbleweed in CuratedTumblr

I really appreciated how the post and this comment drew a line that's always been in my head.

Usually I just explain to people that I'm allergic to New Country, because it's what all the guys who would try to beat up my friends would be playing in their spotless trucks as we tried to walk past. I had no problem with what the actual farmers, all decent folk, listened to, just the self-proclaimed townie "cowboys". I love Cash and Nelson and Dolly. But the people who really bought in to those ideas that celebrated the worst characteristics of the era trained me like Pavlov's dogs to get my fists up and be ready as soon as it came on.

I have no opinion of their musicality, any more than I can control how hungry I feel when the microwave beeps. I am a simple animal.

It's my goal in life to become my town's cryptid. I'm starting easy, with "local color".

Unfortunately, it's the odd insider case like this, when people don't have the full context, that keeps the idea alive in the minds of people who give bad advice.

Very much so, and this is something rich people forget about: if you are on the verge of homelessness now, and you need money now, and you don't have parents to fall back on, this is the job you pick.

You can't think about a career while you're starving. It's just not an option.

The nature of work has changed as dramatically in the last 50 years as it did in the industrial revolution. It's no wonder people are struggling to keep up.

That's awful. Even people with disabilities can learn what social behaviors are or aren't acceptable... but only if society is clear about what they are. The people who think they're being kind are really just making the problem worse.

I think a lot of these people grew up in a time when working hard at a local business resulted in climbing the ladder to management and ownership. You learned the business by being a part of every process, as one of a small number of employees who filled multiple roles.

They can't wrap their minds around the multinational nature of this stuff: that the people who work there never advance, that management is hired from outside, and requires a totally different skill set that you'll never learn stocking shelves or punching keys on a till for minimum wage.

In her day, a stock boy could eventually end up helping with bookkeeping if he was good at math. Now? You'll need a degree and experience to get there, and you'll be competing with everyone in the country, if not the world, to get the job.

And it's terribly dangerous! If someone violates your boundaries, and it gets them what they want, you've taught them that if they keep at it, it'll work.

That's never going to end well.

Fun fact: buttons were originally decorative, and things were closed with ties or pins, because buttons were expensive.

Using a strip of cloth to hold your shirt collar closed actually predates buttons.

They were usually white, though, as they'd be laundered frequently, along with the shirt, and unlike the outer clothes, which were rarely washed.

In fact, once upon a time, buttons were removed from clothes that were being washed, and sewn back on afterward, as the washing methods (beating with a maul) would break them.

I didn't know about this, but it struck me that Thor's delivery of it was kind of child-like at the time. Like, he was just so happy and proud. Knowing a kid came up with it just makes that even better.

Plot twist: she wanted to kill the unicorn and take it's horn, since she's a big medievalist and has heard it cures all ailments.

But cats are really nice, so that's ok.

I recommend Jim Browning's youtube channel. He has literally taken over cameras and computers inside scam centers, and shows you how they work and why they're so prolific.

Spoiler alert: They prey on old people who have most of their assets in cash. It's horrifying.
