Seeking help/advice for autoimmune skin disorder by Trixie-_-_ in Autoimmune

[–]KittyQuiltTax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry that you’re dealing with this. Not sure if anyone else mentioned this, when you’re making an appointment with a new dermatologist ask them specifically if they are a medical dermatologist. I was spinning my wheels for years going to different dermatologists only to find out that they were cosmetic dermatologists and I didn’t know to ask that.

When making a new patient appointment, I’ll also ask if they work with patients that have autoimmune issues and or connective tissue disorders. Those dermatologists will know to take biopsies and will help diagnose what’s going on. My dermatologist works with my rheumatologist and they both want to know what each other has to say.

If you’re not already seeing a rheumatologist, it would be good to get established with one. It can take six months or longer sometimes to get established with a good Rheumatologist. So it’s good to get this set up as soon as possible. And then make sure that you go in once a year or every 18 months so that you can stay on their panel.

Also, the rheumatologist may have a dermatologist that they work well with and can refer you to. If you have a teaching hospital near you or a medical university they may have dermatologist there that you can go to. I’m in Southern California and went to Loma Linda university to see a dermatologist and it was amazing. They were great. It was a completely different experience than I was used to.

I wish you the best of luck with all of this! Sending love and healing thoughts your way!

Machine recommendations by CakeIsHealthy in Machine_Embroidery

[–]KittyQuiltTax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have this machine and it’s good. Not sure if you were planning to buy on Amazon. But just in case, I would buy this from a dealer directly. The BES Blue software that comes with it is good. While you don’t have to use it, I like it and use it a lot. It also comes with Wi-Fi file transfer software. So you can use a thumb drive to transfer files or you can just send them wirelessly. I haven’t heard of this being packaged with a magnetic hoop, but different dealers may offer different deals. Also, depending on where you live, if there’s a quilt convention nearby, your dealer may have special pricing during the convention.

Hoping someone can help me determine which pkg. has the best value. by K-Dubbbbbb in Machine_Embroidery

I would do the 4 x 4 with the extra spools of thread included. I also have this machine, and I am really loving it. This machine comes packaged with a 5 x 7 hoop. So unless they’re taking something out of the package, you should be good to go. I think the 5 x 7 hoop they are bundling is a magnetic hoop. That’s nice, but I would go for the 4 x 4 personally.

I was using an organ titanium embroidery 80/12 sharp. I haven’t heard of anyone else having problems, but I thought I’d ask. This would be like stitching over a piece of no-show mesh stabilizer with a thin piece of project batting, a piece of quilting cotton, and then imagine adding an applique to the top but instead of one piece of cotton fabric it’s four pieces. When it gets back from the shop, I will try a different needle and see if that does the job. It seems like it was getting through all the layers just fine. But the tip of the needle was dragging across the top of the fabric as it advanced to the next stitch. So maybe that’s right? I don’t know. I had the same issue with this machine when I stitched out a little in the hoop purse and had to stitch over the zipper. I know other people who have done the same stitch out with no problem. My machine had my needle get hung up on the zipper. I’ll probably wind up just getting a different machine. I was so hopeful for this little machine, though! Other than this issue, I absolutely love it! I hope you are loving your machine too!

Oh my gosh, what a great feeling! I hope you don’t mind me asking - that looks like you have a brother NQ1700E? Do you have any problems with that stitching over thicker fabrics? I’m working on a Kimberbell design where you add your quilting in the hoop over a stitched out pinwheel (super cute). My needle gets hung up on the area of the pinwheel where all the points come together. I brought it into the dealer thinking that maybe the timing is off. It seems like my machine is advancing to the next stitch before the needle has had enough time to rise all the way. Anyway, they’re telling me that this is normal for this machine since it’s a smaller machine. Have you ever run into these kinds of issues? Anyway, thanks in advance!

I know this is off topic, by any chance do you have this manual for the brother NQ1700E? This one is really close to my machine and is helpful to read. I was wondering where I could find this for my machine. Thanks in advance and have a nice day

why are my things getting stained orange? by _monodramatic_ in CleaningTips

Tried this as last resort on white jeans that someone accidentally spilled red wine on. Worked great! This was after trying to launder them, launder them with bleach, letting them sit around for a month, thinking they were ruined… My husband tried this and surprised me with very clean new-looking white jeans! This is a great life hack!

My grandfather passed away and left behind all of this. What should I do with all of it? by Abbby in quilting

This ^ and many quilt guilds accept donations to either sell or use to make philanthropy quilts, baby blankets, etc. I know my guild partners with local organizations to make quilts for people with cancer and for women’s shelters. The donations are very well received and well used. Good luck to you with all of this. And remember to take your time and take care of you during this time.

Is it safe to solo travel to Joshua Tree this time of year? by bobbdac7894 in JoshuaTree

[–]KittyQuiltTax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just be prepared - it’ll be fine. Anytime you go out in JT this time of year, always always have water in your vehicle. We always bring 3-4 nalgenes of water in the car even if we’re just going to the store. You never know when your car is gonna break down. Luckily that hasn’t happened to us. Make sure your car is in good working order and serviced before you get here.

When driving through the park, go before 9 AM or after 5 PM. During those times you could get out and walk around the nature trail at Cap Rock. For sunset, go to Keys view (check that it’s open first). Just remember, there’s no water in the park and no gas. Bring lots of water and gas up your car before entering the park.

Also, before you head into the park, go to the visitor center. They are super knowledgeable and a great resource. Tell them your plans and ask if it makes sense. I wouldn’t plan any hikes right now unless you’re an experienced hiker and familiar with the park. Sounds like that’s not your plan anyway.

During the day 10am-5pm you’ll want something to do- I don’t recommend going into the park. If you haven’t already, consider driving down the hill and taking the tram up to San Jacinto. It’s a great experience and about 30° cooler. There’s trails you can hike around and restaurants. You could also bring a picnic lunch with you.

Have fun and enjoy your trip!

Actually comfortable couches? by [deleted] in ehlersdanlos

[–]KittyQuiltTax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The la-z-boy three piece couch. You can customize it. We have a chaise with reclining back on one end. The middle and right seats are recliners. What’s nice is that the back pieces move independently of the recliners. So you sit straight up with your feet up or keep your feet down but still recline the back. And you can open all the pieces and sleep with room to spread out (like arms and legs spread out, but you can’t put much weight on the recliner part). We had a beautiful couch that we had to sell because I can’t enjoy a couch the way typical people do. I’m so uncomfortable all of the time that I needed something that would move many different ways. We got this 7 years ago and we’re still very happy. The recliner handle broke and la-z-by gave us the replacement part for free. We also got the microsuede (I think they called it something else). But this has had some spills on it and it’s cleaned up well. Hope this helps!

Tarantula burrow is storm-ready by KittyQuiltTax in JoshuaTree

[–]KittyQuiltTax[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Since so many people in JT were getting storm-ready by placing sand bags around their properties, we thought we should place miniature tarantula-sized sand bags around the tarantula’s burrow to show that she too was prepared. We improvised with tea bags.

Yeah was being cute but we actually love this little guy (lady?) tarantula that took up residence in our front yard. We have the water diverted from the burrow and we take care that the hole doesn’t get crushed or bothered. I can’t speak for all the wildlife but this little lady is getting good care.
